So anyone here actually think we saw the best team in the country play tonight?

Yeah but you know there will still be people who will blow the money and go there. Might not be me because I'm currently a student and thus am dirt poor.

There will be people, yes, but not 80,000 people to sell it out.

So a team would win 3 bowls in one year? Don't think it would happen.

I do support the top 6 in a playoff. 1 and 2 get a bye and then play it out. The majority of the fans don't have enough money to support three bowls and travel and there aren't enough fans out there to sell out all the games, it could happen but very unlikely.

They need to have a coaches poll and a press poll and monitor the rankings and picks weekly. If either a coach or press writer steps out of line then they lose their pick for 5 years and bump up the next one. Same for the coaches. I would probably pick around 50 or so. Also, I wouldn't have rankings until the end of the 1st weeks games in October. Most teams will have played at least 4 games and maybe 5.

People who have the right too vote don't excercise good judgement usually because they don't really give a crap. These are the ones that need to be punished.

mover, this is exactly the format that i advocate!

on another note, a friend of mine from Aiken, SC, recently retold me the story of how he played William "the Refridgerator" Perry in a game of pool in Aiken, and "let him win, because i felt sorry for him" after you abused him that one year.. classic!

Too funny

So if Tech is in the playoffs and has a game in Orlando in the first round, wins and goes to Dallas in the second round and gets into the finals in Pasadena, how many are you going to?

Dang it!!! I forgot all those fans in Div 1AA are independently wealthy! As you indicated, you could play them at the higher ranked home field (as the D1AA and NFL do), or you could count on good community support for the playoff game.

Honestly, how do pro fans manage the travel issues?

Sorry, my bad.

I'd say that not many pro fans do travel, or at least not long distances. The difference with the pros is there are only a relative few teams and there are fans of each scattered across the country. It's not like the visiting team gets many tickets in the pros to start with. Also home team season ticket holders are usually required to buy playoff tickets so you already have your sellout pretty much guaranteed.

That is a good point, and while you are still right, I would like to point out that most NFL fanbases are not as passionate as college fanbases. They just aren't. Unless you're Pittsburgh, Green Bay, Dallas, Oakland (yes, Oakland), Philly, and to a lesser extent, Cleveland, or New York, the fan bases are nowhere near as live or die as their college counterparts. Even out of the teams I mentioned, only Pittsburgh and Green Bay fans really do any travel. Dallas just has fans everywhere. So, while I agree with you for the most part, I would like to see how much of an effect the higher level of passion would have on the issue.

I will agree that more college fans would like to travel for a playoff system. I just don't think that many have the money to do it.

Probably because a good number of college fans are college students.

Has it gone entirely unnoticed that Ole Miss spanked Texas Tech who was the X-factor in the whole Oklahoma vs. Texas national title game debate??? That's nice that Utah beat Alabama, but let's see them play USC and see if they can rub that ole magic Buddha belly against them??? USC lost to Oregon St. who lost to Utah and Penn St. (before USC beat them). They dug their own grave with that loss. Let's not forget a few years back when USC won a MNC while Auburn sat at home undefeated.

I liked your idea of realignment of conferences better to take the rankings out of the picture completely.

With eight super conferences, each with a championship game, there is no need for wild cards or rankings. Just play the conference champions, each determined solely by their record.

Some of the current teams in FBS probably need to drop down to FCS, but eight conferences should accommodate all real contenders in the non-BCS conferences.

Well, to me it seems like it might be 1/3 max, though I don't think it would be less than 1/4. I'd say the portion of GT's fans being student vs non-student doesn't represent the nation real well. A lot of schools of much bigger student populations and fan percentage of that then GT.

Where are you getting it from that a larger percentage of their fan bases are students? Sure they have more students, but they have even more fans. 1/3 is ridiculous and 1/4 is likely a stretch.

Sanford Stadium seats 92,746. Enrollment 25,335.
Ben Hill Griffin seats 88,548. U of F enrollment 35189.
Ohio Stadium (The Wishbone) seats 102,329. OSU enrollment 39209.
Michigan Stadium seats 106,201. U of M enrollment 26083.
Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum seats 93,607. USC enrollment 16384.

So, if every undergrad had 100% attendance (which I highly doubt), then percentage-wise UGA is 27%, UF is 40%, OSU is 37%, UofM is 25%, and USCwest is 17%.

Numbers are from Petersons for enrollment and wikipedia for stadium seating.

And you're forgetting there are fans who don't attend the games.
