i've heard that this kid only played football his senior year of high school and as a result, did not garner as much recruiting attention. He is one heck of an athlete and from what I hear our coaches were very impressed and apparantly made the comment that he was a kid that we "had to have".
this is similar to Vance Walker and Sedric Griffin...who were discovered by us at the Shrine Bowl....except Richardson was seen at the South Carolina North/South All-Star game.
South Carolina is definitely a backwards enough state to have players lost in the lower classifications and smaller schools...to be discovered late.
If you read the Rivals article you will also note that GT staff trainer Clay Farr also went to Ware Shoals....a 1A high school.
I trust our staff to review film and bring in the late recruits. They no a lot more about who can compete than I do.
This does not mean I would advocate waiting on 100% of our recruits until January to find the hidden gems...you definitely have to sprinkle in the can't miss guys that everyone knows about. You just do not need a full class of them. (i.e. Utah beating the snot out of Alabama!).
The small school thing is my main concern - the level of competition is so much lower there, just considering the availability of bodies. I would count him as an automatic redshirt with potential just for that reason.
There is a reason kids get recruited out of the bigger schools - they have a reputation as being more "game ready" that small school folks. I think it goes to the amount of money at bigger schools and the additional coaches on staff.
When coaches look at recruits...they are not just looking at the results because it can be heavily affected by the competition.
They are seeing how they move...hips...how they read and react...form...technique...power...strength...speed. Are they in position to make plays?
The read by DB's in particular is huge. This is exactly why a 4.6 guy can make a tackle faster than a 4.35 guy.
I know a man who played DB in the NFL, and who coached for 30 years afterward in the NFL, Both as a DB coach and a DC. He once told me (maybe 2-3 years ago) that a guy with 4.6 speed and good technique can play S or WR "all day" in the NFL.
This small white guy Leonhard came into the Ravens this past year and had one of the most remarkable seasons I have ever seen. He's a free agent so who knows if he stays but he took Landry's job and I just don't see him giving it back any time soon.
seeing as how Landry was injured and then on IR after that vicious collision, he didnt really have the chance to compete against the guy. i wouldnt count him out!
You have to wonder if he's ever coming back after going through the neck injury, etc. He has to fly to the ball and play with reckless abandon. That's not easy to do after your (albeit momentary) lifeless body is strapped to the stretcher.
Plus the doctor still has not released him.
Plus the Ravens drafted two more safeties last year. My guess is Landry just may be done.
That's what they said about Vance Walker.
