RB's

help me out here, 2 guys i don't know much about is kelly and watson. is my perception that kelly is more of a traditional blocking fullback and watson is a hybrid FB/TB (sort of like Drummond) correct?

Watson is the better runner of the two....but both are good all-around RB's.

Lets hope Kelly can bounce back...he is a first class kid. He grew up in Decatur and always had his goal as being a Yellow Jacket.

Kelly was on his visit at Arkansas when we called him and told him he had an offer. As the story goes, he was so excited he got very emotional about it and committed on the spot.

Good student...good guy off the field.

I am not sure he will see alot of playing time if we stay healthy....but he fits what makes someone a Yellow Jacket.

Hitting the hole hard is a very good trait to have in the NFL. JD knows how to get hit and gain that extra yard. Assuming he shows good blocking ability, he is as good as the NFL gets. Low body mass, huge legs, speed, smarts, can catch the ball...he has it all.

but....you have to read the hole in the NFL...you are often times looking at the shoulders of your lineman to anticipate devlopment.

Our offense is blind faith. You are close to the line and you hit a "gap"...or the area where there is supposed to be a "gap". You may get the ball...may not...it is not even your choice.

Again...I am not saying he cannot do it...I am telling you what the scouts will say.

Nesbitt's passing

... would look a lot better in statistics if Bebe hadn't dropped so many passes in the endzone that hit him in both hands. I can think of three such passes without even digging hard.

He played out of the shotgun throughout high school. He can get it done if we can get the O-line to keep his jersey clean.

Well .. the opposing coaches will definitely say what you're saying when negatively recruiting against our RBs. But I think scouts aren't looking for system so much as they are tangibles and character, of which JD has plenty.

Red, you are correct but I think reading the hole in the NFL is overrated. Don't misunderstand me, it is important. Finding a hole and/or juking around is an important ability for some backs but not all.

Jamal Lewis was terrible at juking or "finding the hole" and he ran for over 2000 yards one year. Plus Jamal Lewis could not catch a pass to save his life, much less run something effective once he did.

One of the problems in scouting is that reading the hole has a lot to do with practicing a lot with your offensive linemen and sensing what is happening from them. One style of blocking doesn't automatically translate to another style in the NFL. So "reading" is as much a crap shoot as any other skill.

Again I am not diminishing the fact that reading is an important skill (see TC), but that it's just one thing. In the B Back position, it can be difficult to see how much Reggie Bush does a guy have in him. But in the tailback position at USC, it's often difficult to see how much Jon Dwyer does that fellow have.

If JD could demonstrate some Reggie Bush, then he'd be a Top Five pick. As it is (and every offense can't showcase every needed NFL skill), he can be a First Round Pick without showing the flash.

p.s. I expanded the topic slightly from finding the hole to also include juking/flash.

Juking and finding a hole are 2 totally different things. Finding a hole is a skillset that combines feel, vision, and patience. Almost every good NFL back has this. All the "great ones" have it. Juking a.k.a. making people miss is just pure athletic ability. When you get a back that is great at both....you have:

Walter Payton
Barry Sanders
Adrian Peterson

Of course Payton and Sanders were special, but the NFL is a lot about doing things well in little ways. Hitting the hole hard and as designed by a coach is more important than "finding the hole". Jamal Lewis never found a hole, he just hit the intended spot extremely hard. (When he paused to look (threw in a few studdersteps often) he absolutely sucked.)

In fairness, I should step back and say that SOME newer NFL offenses do in fact set up plays for backs to juke and/or determine what hole to use. Offenses in the shotgun run a lot of deep handoffs, almost like a draw, that players do read a lot.

But I was comparing to a typical Pro offense with the QB under center. For those first and second down situations, the fact that JD's been trained to hit the hole hard is more of a positive when compared to loss of ability to prove that he can "find the hole".

Am I reading this correctly to state that Nesbitt had surgery on his ankles? Did I miss something? I don't remember hearing about that at all.

Maybe I'm late with this, but it looks like Nesbitt did have surgery this off season:

"As a precaution, Nesbitt’s ankles were taped under and over his shoes. He injured both ankles last season. Two months ago, he underwent surgery on his left ankle to clean out bone spurs."

I know that everyone here is only speculating based on 1 year in an offense that does not take advantage of JD's skillset. This kid is the truth he was able to put the numbers up in a system with a subpar OL. JD is a true Tail back playing a B Back. When was the last time you all look as his HS highlights. No matter what the system is Tripple O or Pro Set. Dwyer will Excell he is that good. No doubt, He has the total package.

Damn, this thread gets me excited about our running game. I have a feeling AA is going to be a beast, and Dwyer, Roddy, Peeples, Wright, Cox, and company are going to run over people.

Then, one to Bebe over the top for good measure.

Here's an idea....let's just win the doggone NC this year. Why not?

I just saw Anthony Allen today at practice and I now find the VPIs fans' belief that their backfield is better is nonsense. This guy is freakin fast!
