By TIM REYNOLDSCORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) -Mark Whipple, who helped Ben Roethlisberger win his first Super Bowl and coached Massachusetts to a Division I-AA national championship in 1998, was hired Tuesday as Miami's new offensive coordinator.
Whipple, 51, most recently was an offensive assistant coach with the Philadelphia Eagles, who were in this year's NFC championship game.
He accepted the Miami job on Monday, and the hiring process was complete Tuesday morning. His first task will focus on recruiting: Signing day is Feb. 4, meaning Whipple will have about a week to get to know the players Miami is targeting.
"Aside from being innovative at his craft, Mark is a tremendous individual who will positively impact our student-athletes on and off the field," Miami coach Randy Shannon said.
Whipple replaces Patrick Nix, who was fired after two seasons with the Hurricanes. Miami was 7-6 this past season, falling in the Emerald Bowl to California.
if (typeof(AAMB4) != 'undefined') document.writeln(AAMB4);
His hiring was well-received quickly in the Miami football circle.
"'The U' is going to be back," Arizona Cardinals running back Edgerrin James - a former Miami star and the cousin of current Hurricanes running back Javarris James - said shortly after the announcement in Tampa, Fla., where he was taking part in Super Bowl media day.
After Nix was fired, he said he had a different philosophy than Shannon.
So Shannon spent much of the past month searching for someone he'd be in synch with, and ultimately decided on Whipple, whose reputation in the college game - albeit at the Football Championship Subdivision level - is an impressive one.
Miami is returning several of its top offensive players from last season, including quarterback Jacory Harris, both starting running backs, most of the offensive line and its top six receivers.
"I feel like we're going to be a great team," Whipple said. "Coach Shannon and I have been on the same page from day one. Our goal is to win a national championship. The one thing I haven't done is win one at the I-A level. It's been a goal of mine for a while now. I couldn't think of a better place to work toward that goal than the University of Miami."
Whipple was Pittsburgh's quarterbacks coach from 2004 through 2006, helping to develop Roethlisberger, who was the youngest starting QB to win a Super Bowl four seasons ago when the Steelers beat the Seattle Seahawks.
He spent 16 years as a head coach at Massachusetts, Brown - his alma mater - and New Haven, going 121-59 in those seasons.
Whipple's 1998 team at Massachusetts set school records in points scored (524), touchdowns (73), total yards (7,074), passing yards (4,050), completions (306) and first downs (354). He also had record-setting offenses at Brown during four seasons there, as well as at New Haven - which led the nation by averaging 50.5 points and 588 yards per game in 1992.
Whipple has also coached at St. Lawrence and Union in upstate New York, as well as with the USFL's Arizona Wranglers and at New Hampshire.

PJ will have it out for this guy... Umass beat PJ's GSU team in the title game in 98'. However, GSU did murder them in the playoffs in 99'.

OHHHHHHHHHH MAN I HOPE WE MURDER THEM THIS YEAR! SCREW ANYTHING FROM UMASS!

(no offence to any mass GT fans)

Great, another "coach-in-waiting" announcement will come late Fall.
Not so sure that would be the case. The last 2 HC's at Miami were promoted from within (Coker and Shannon). If Shannon's program isn't successful then why would anyone on his staff be considered to replace him? I see them bringing in someone from outside the program, but possibly with ties to Miami. Sorta like when Butch Davis returned to Miami. (Not saying it would be Davis by any means.) Isn't there a head coach around these parts that was a QB at Miami? Not prdicting . . . just sayin'.

I can't tell you how fitting this is! After a couple years of dealing with a $h*tty offense, who else would you call but Mr. Whipple to clean it up???

I am either too young or too old to get it

too young, i bet

Mr. Whipple has passed

Dick Wilson, a character actor who turned "Please don't squeeze the Charmin" into a national catchphrase as exasperated shopkeeper Mr. Whipple in the TV commercial campaign that ran for more than two decades, has died. He was 91.

Shannon is "family", black, and well connected to the university administration. Barack Hussein Obama will be replaced before Miami replaces Randy Shannon.

Why the need to say Barack "Hussein" Obama? It's 2009 buddy, don't be so ignorant.

Don't be so short sighted, it's the mans name.

I'm not being short sighted, I just am not sure I see what point is conveyed by emphasizing his middle name. Just as I don't see what point is conveyed by emphasizing Randy Shannon is black.

I understand what the point is that he is trying to make, and to me, his attempt is ignorant and offensive.

HE'S A MUSLIM TERRORIST. EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT. OBAMA FLEW THE PLANE INTO THE WORLD TRADE CENTER AND PARACHUTED TO SAFETY, THEN THE JEWS CAUGHT HIM ON A GIANT TRAMPOLINE MADE OF THE SKIN OF THE FETUSES OF UNBORN ABORTED BABIES. IT'S TRUE, I READ IT ON TOWNHALL.COM.

Just as I don't see what point is conveyed by emphasizing Randy Shannon is black.
Henceforth, I decree that all Stingtalk posts referring to Mr. Shannon shall refer to him as "Randy BlackieMcBlack Shannon."

No different than saying George W Bush.

It is just Obama's name...I am confused...is there something to be ignorant about with that? Is there something I am supposed to be offended about? It sounds like you are the person who is drawing up problems with the middle name.

If you really believe that is the reason he dropped the Hussein in there, given the context of the post, then perhaps I am the one "drawing up problems." And if that is the case, sorry for referencing it. I don't really think that was his point though.
