Maryland is expected to name assistant head coach/offensive coordinator James Franklin as head coach in waiting, Rivals.com has learned. In recent seasons, several NFL teams have pursued Franklin. Tampa Bay most recently made a run at Franklin. To keep him in College Park, Maryland officials are expected to announce the move in coming days. Current head coach Ralph Friedgen, who turns 62 in April, is entering his ninth year at Maryland. He has a 64-36 record with six bowl appearances.

Franklin, 37, was part of Maryland's staff from 2000-04 as wide receivers coach. He coached receivers with the Green Bay Packers in 2005 before serving as offensive coordinator at Kansas State from 2006-07 under Ron Prince. Franklin rejoined Friedgen's Terrapin staff in 2008 as assistant head coach/offensive coordinator.

Franklin is native of Langhorne, Pa., and a graduate of East Stroudsburg, where he played quarterback from 1991-94.

This is a stupid move by UMD and all the schools following this trend. There are so many things that can change over the course of X-number of years.

I've applied for the position of Coach-In-Waiting-In-Wait-For-The-Coach-In-Waiting at UMD in case the coach in waiting gets tired of waiting.

I'm still waiting for an answer.

I'd just like to say that I am proud of the Fridge and what he has accomplished as Head Coach at UMd. After a couple of hot seasons early, I thought he might shrivel up but he's kept a fairly strong program and a team I NEVER want to face.

Hmmm, I think he did pretty much shrivel up. MD has done virtually nothing since he kicked butt with Vanderlinden's recruits.

Actually I'd put money on MD losing after every big game they win, though that can't be blamed on the coach entirely.

Friedgen shriveled up? How could that happen? At most he would shrivel down to normal size. :D A dehydrated Ralph would still be too big for my clothes.

He gave Gailey his fair share of hell.

I think Gailey was 3-4 vs. the FRIDGE????

I think Gailey had that type of record against a lot of coaches. If you take out the cupcake non-conference games, the D1AA games, and Duke, he was probably close to .500.

How could this be? Gailey only coached here 6 years, and he only played them in 2002, 03, 04, 06 and 07. For the record, he was 3-2 vs. UMD.

2007 - L 28-26
2006 - W 27-23
2004 - W 20-7
2003 - W 7-3
2002 - L 34-10

I partied last night. Cut me some slack...but thanks for the info.

Amazingly, those bookend losses told a lot about our Gailey-led teams. The '02 game was the first glimpse of a group that got smacked in the mouth and proceeded to lay down (gave up 200+ yards to a no name RB and 27 unanswered 2nd half points IIRC). The '07 put the nail in the Gailey coffin IMO (the VPI game hammered it home). A solid 4th qtr comeback put Tech in position to drive for the win. Instead, we milked the clock around the 30 yard line. Throw in a brutal holding penalty and the result was a missed 50-yard FG in the final seconds.

Wait, what? Are they really that concerned with keeping the status quo? Wow.

Gailey smoked Tuberville though.

yeah, and beat a bunch of good teams with scholarship limitations and little choice at QB.. but revisionist history is abundant on this board...

After reading where they lost 30 letterman or sr's or someone. Mes thinks frig is looking for a quick exit.
