Amazing how some 'all-time' series have changed

in the last few years. None of these teams would I have ever thought could have been so competitive against the Rambling Wreck. Thank goodness that GT has had more winning streaks than losing streaks lately.

Example 1: Yellow Jackets are 13-1 vs Duke in past 14 gms. Before that Ga Tech was 'only' 32-29-1 over the Devils.

Example 2: Jackets are 9-2 over North Carolina in last 11 tilts. Before then Tech owned a 14-16-3 losing record to the Sticky Heels....

Example 3: Wrecks have rung up a 9-0-1 pasting of Vanderbilt in last 10 skirmishes. Previously, GT recorded a losing series with the Commodores of 9-15-2 ! Amazing!

As far as Vandy goes, the last time we played them prior to 2002 was 1967,and the last time they beat us was 1941. Most of that "series" was before the war when Vandy actually played football. If my quick look was right, they've only had 6 winning seasons since the 1950, but were decent prior to then.

Teams (major conference) that we have an all time losing record to:

Arizona 0-2
Alabama 21-28
Auburn 41-47
California 3-4
Florida State 8-12
Fresno 0-2
uga 39-59
Michigan 0-1
Notre Dame 6-27
Penn St. 3-4
Pitt. 2-5
Purdue 0-1
USC west 1-2
Tenn. 17-24
Texas 0-1
Utah 0-1
UVA 14-16
VT 2-4

That's 18 schools still playing D1 that have a winning record over us. 3 from the ACC, 2 ACC we play every year and uga. Personally I would love to see us play any of these schools again so we can improve on this. I hate having an all time losing record to a school like Arizona, Fresno, Purdue, Pitt, and Utah. Many of these records are close and only a game or two away from being even.

The other thing I noticed as I looked at that stuff, is that it's been over 20 years since we played TN. We really need to get them back on the schedule sometime in the future.

wow, ND has owned us. I would love to see GT v. ND, CPJ v. Weis/Tenuta. do we have any more scheduled vs. ND anytime in the near future?

That list irks the hell out of me.

We were nearly even with UGa when I started Tech in 1980.

And a losing record against UVa makes me want to hurl.

And 0-2 against Fresno. God, that is beyond embarassing.

Over the next 5 years or so I fully expect the uva record to change in our favor.

I expect the VT one to stay within 2 games or so as long as Beamer is there. Something tells me in the long run when Beamer retires they are going to have many down years (think ray goff at uga) that we can capitalize on and swing the record our way.

With a good year next year the FSU record will be within 3 games.

To even get the ugag record close again we need a 30 year stretch like the one they just FINISHED on us.

I think its important to note that we only have losing records against 3 ACC teams and of those three they are all within 4 games. (even though FSU dominated us in the 90's, no one would notice from that overall record)

or back when schools' teams actually had something in common with the general student populations
You've evidently never read Dodd's Luck. College football teams have pretty much never had much in common with the student body.

We haven't been close to even with the dawgs since Bobby Dodd retired after the 1966 season. Your other two points are extremely valid reasons for questioning the status of the program.

Chan Gailey is solely responsible for 11.1% of the teams on that list.

err.... Gailey/Tenuta.

I'm not sure how you arrived at your conclusion. But Gailey actually had a better winning percentage than
(1) Bobby Ross
(2) Bill Curry
(3) Pepper Rodgers
(4) Bill Fulcher, and
(5) Bud Carson, or every coach since Dodd except for O'Leary.

You might note that O'Leary was 0-7 against FSU, had a lsoing record against UVa, and allowed the losses to Ugag to reach 7 in a row before finally winning in 1998.

Bill Curry was 0-7 against Auburn, 2-4-1 against Tennessee, and 2-5 against the dawgs.

Gailey is not anywhere close to being primarily responsible for any of the deficits, except for doing nothing against the dawgs.

The series record was 32-29-5 at the end of Carson's tenure. It was one of the closest rivalries on record. After our 1977 win, it stood at 36-31-5. The last 30 years have been brutal (8-22). We last had the lead in 1963 with a 27-26-5 series record.
