Q&A with Coach Johnson

Great read! I wish it was a longer interview. a few quotes from the interview:

Some fans have wondered whether ACC defenses might be better at defending your offense now that they've seen it. Did you experience that when you were at Navy, that opponents got used to it?

PJ: Not really. They'll probably get better ideas maybe or whatever, but we're going to get better doing it, too. It's a tradeoff. We were in a league at Georgia Southern, we won the league all five years. I didn't see a change a lot from Year 1 to Year 2. At Navy we played a lot of the same teams. Some teams played us better than others. The teams with the best players seem to have the best ideas. I don't worry about that. If that was the case, when Navy and Air Force played, it would always be 0-0.

Do you know who your return guy is going to be?
PJ: Mmm, I've got a pretty good idea. It won't be a guy that played last year, probably on punts.
Switching things up a bit?
PJ: Well, we've got some guys back. We've got a guy I think can be a special punt returner in Jerrard Tarrant who didn't play last year. Roddy Jones did an adequate job on kicks ... we're going to look at everything. We're going to change up some personnel, we're going to change up some schemes, and see if we can't do a little better job in that area.

So where is the obligatory, "HD is an idiot" post? So you guys like her when you like the story, eh?

No she is still an idiot....but its easy to write an article when 75% is direct quotation from a direct source. Atleast she asked decent questions. Her opinions were left out of this blog making it readable.

The best thing GT did the past few years was hire this guy. The minute I read that they had got him I said, "Oh crap."

Every time I hear about all the stuff people are saying about Paul Johnson it seems everyone respects him whether they believe in the triple option or not. It is hard to argue with >75% winning rate that was probably watered down a bit from a few bad years at Navy.

Alabama and Nebraska both looked at him i've been told, I am very happy he is back in the state of Georgia!

1 bad year. It kills me that he had to go through that first year, he is a better coach than that but no upper level schools at that time wanted to take a shot at a coach using the flexbone. "everyone knows passing teams are winning teams, duh."

I just hope he wins the ACC this year so I am not a liar with my sig!

Well if not 09 you still have 2010 to try and meet that.

Interesting comments regarding the return game. Most people don't realize that Navy was one of the top kick return teams during PJ's years. Because of the type of offense PJ runs, he ultimately ends up with a lot of OL, WRs, & backs who know how to block in space. Last year lack of depth, lack of fast OL, and having to spend so much time mastering the base offense hurt the return team. Not to mention lack of a sure-handed return man.

This year I expect some improvement on returns. Tarrant & Allen are sure-handed, the team has a year's experience learning to block in space, and the fact that our O & D are no longer new will afford significant gains in the return game.

Until we are stocked with personel who have been in PJ's system awhile, we won't reach our potential in the return game. But believe me, PJ understands the importance of having a short field on offense, and he will get the return game where it needs to be.
