Pretty interesting thread on the Canes board discussing our "rivalry". I dont consider them a rival. I now expect us to beat them every year. But...some pretty ignorant comments. They STILL dont give us very much respect. I laugh at the comments suggesting our D will be down. Our secondary and linebackers will be MUCH improved.

This may just be me but I associate rivals with pure, unadulterated hate. When I see someone wearing a rival's gear, I have to remind myself about appropriate social conduct to keep me from tripping said rival and spitting in their face. And I know a team is a rival when I know just as much about their football team and history as my own. <-- Just in case we get into an argument about which school is superior (which UM always is

). As for Ga. Tech, I don't know anything about them except that their coach is Paul Johnson, they run some crazy ass offense, and their guys make my guys eat grass with just one stiff arm. Also, if I were to see someone wearing GT gear walk past me, I think my inclination would be to hang my head down in shame and think "(sigh) .. maybe next year." So, by my definition of what a rival is, no, GT is not a rival. They are our pimp and we are their b!tch.

And it'll stay this way till we beat them and then beat them over and over again. It's unacceptable that we haven't beat GT since joining the ACC. They own us right now. It's not a rivalry when you can't beat the other team.

Yeah but just a year ago that was how we had been up to late against UGA. Glad to get one W in our column, now we just need alot more over the next few years against them!

True but it isn't quite the same since we've been playing Georgia since inception and we've been playing Maimi since the millennium. That and the fact that we actually own the win streak record between the schools makes me thing of that as different.
 
If you have to ask yourself if something is a rivalry, then it probably isn't.

No, 305 says that a rivalry is where you know your history and your rival's history as well -- as well as remembering social graces not to spit and hit someone wearing those colors. he then says we are not a rival -- because although we are their pimp right now, he does not HATE us, nor does he know our history. So we are not a rival to Miami to him -- we are just a team that beats them regularly.

UGag on the other hand -- we know their history and HATE them -- despite the (prior to last year, thank God) 7 years in a row. We will always know their history and hate them -- no matter what the overall record or the most recent series have been.

That is a rivalry -- where you hate the team no matter what the overall series score or recent events have occurred. And that is why I love and completely agree with 305's post.
 
I just mean the public's perception of it, Everyone knows it is one of the oldest rivalries going.
 
I get great joy out of beating Miami because they are a football school. It matters to them. They care when they lose. They make winning even better by being arrogant jerks the rest of the year, even if they lose. But I wouldn't call them a rival, not yet anyway.

UM fans are college football elitist...or thats what they think. I remember reading their boards when they first jioned the ACC. Most of them only talked about non-conference opponents. They also used to talk about how winning the ACC every year would be a cake walk. My how the tide has turned. Imho Shannon isnt the guy. With that kind of talent 9 wins should be a given every year. His record is kind of sad given the talent. Imagine what CPJ would do with their roster. Looking forward to putting up 40+ on them again!!!

Honestly I can see UNC having a crappy year next year. They have one of the harder ACC schedules. They play at us and at VT (on a thurs no less) at NCST (who will whoop them again if their QB is healthy) and then there is Duke and Miami, so those are kind of crap shoots at this point). I mean it is true that as bad a season is possible for us but we return a lot more [important] people and a coach with proper time to develop things while they lost their 2 best offensive and defensive players.

However, I guess it isn't a bad thing when they think that if they can beat us they win the ACC right then and there.
 
UNC has the weakest OOC schedule in the history of division 1 football though. They'll break even in conference, but still go 8-4 over all, and end the season talking about how great they're going to be next year.
 
Honestly, I think Duke is going to surprise some folks this year. I think we have far greater upside than UNC. Our D will surprise, considering most other ACC fans in general beelieve our D is taking a major step down from last year. Dont think CPJ wont have us motivated for the UNC game AT home!
 
Whenever I check out a different teams message board to get their opinions on things, I always see a bunch of GT fans chiming in, talking trash, or defending GT. I would rather just see their own fans, rather than our fans everywhere. Sometimes it gets to the point where a couple of GT fans are talking back and forth, on other fans' message boards.
