Yeah, but this was WEIRD. There was every possible indication that this was a done deal... Starting with reliable but not GT-affiliated (Thamel, etc.), then all the way to our own AJC beat writer. They all started to say a deal was done. Then KS had to retract? That's not common.

Could be more donor influence? Threatening to pull funding?

So what happens when the donors get their way, promote Key, and then he falls flat on his face? We nuke the program or just drop down to the AAC where we no longer need said donors?

We try again with another coach the donors are willing to fund. If you don't like that, you don't like college football!

But this is what can happen when your AA is in as bad financial shape as ours. No doubt Batt's number one goal the next few years is to improve and diversify our finances. And Key would presumably have a team-friendly contract.

Also, to be clear, my post was pure speculation.
 
I think folks in the GTAA and big donors might have faint impressions of what's going on behind the scenes, but they do not have the full story. On Twitter, KQ said that not much information is leaking out:

Being as how our finalists seem to be Brent Key and Willie Fritz…ummm…ya…it’s not as suspenseful as that.
