We have so much more depth this year then what we had last year. If you look last year our second string b back was our first string a back! At a back we really only had Roddy and Lucas all year. Half the year Embry was hurt and the other half Wright was a RS. Now let's look at the depth for this year.

So in summary we have went from no depth at B back to being stacked. This years #4 b back would have been the #2 last year! This will also help us keep JD more fresh as the year wears on. We could also see him getting more time at A back now. Its all very exciting!

I think Embry getting hurt is the main reason Roddy actually started getting a lot of playing time. May be wrong though.
 
Were gonna be loaded in the backfield for yrs to come!! Hopefully we can build depth on the OL like we have at Ab and Bb.

Don't think so. Roddy was the presumed starter when PJ arrived. If Embry had not been hurt, Wright would have kept his RS though.
 
The problems with offensive linemen are that you need so many more than any other position, plus very few can step in and play the first year or two. You are actually recruiting (OL) for two or three years down the road.
 
OL are 5/25 (20%) of the team (counting K, P and LS as well). Assuming a similar distribution for the 85 scholie players, that amounts to 17 OL for a "full" set. 17 yields 3 full OLs, plus a couple of extras. Therefore, if we go 4-6 deep at OL, we are far over the needed allotment, and it would hurt not only other areas, but ST's as well.

But the point is taken that we do need 3 stable OL units.

Good point, and that's the problem with people talking about what number of O linemen we need on the team for depth. By the numbers if everyone was healthy we'd be decently deep at OL, maybe not 3 full sets but close. However, many of them are RS freshman or sophomores. I think we won't be that bad off on O line come sept. mostly because we won't have 5 guys who are our only real choices for the job. Hopefully some competition in the summer and fall will push our guys to perform better.

We lose Sellers, Voss and Howard this year, so assuming that the three walk-on OL make scholie next year, I'd imagine we recruit 2-3 this fall. That's a lot for our limited scholies this year. We may have to endure another year as Barrick is the only JR on the list and we can recoup the following year.

Lingering effects of probation. It hits your lines the worst as that is where you need the most numbers with 9 of 22 players being linemen. Under probation, numbers are short, and getting skill players will always be at the expense of sufficient OL/DL.

So we really need to recruit more than 3, since we're not up to 17 yet and we're losing 3. Only taking 3 will keep us understaffed (14) at the position.

By definition your backups should be RS freshmen or sophomores, you just don't want them starting if you can help it. What you need ideally is a good mix by class and skill set. One of the things that seems to be a benefit of PJs offense is that people can move from G to T more easily than in most offenses.
