New walkon

It would be a big help if we could let Blair specialize a bit to keep him from changing leg motion every time he goes out on the field.

It would be nice to see some long kickoffs and to be able to keep them in bounds, consider the impact of the initial kickoff in the LSU game. OOB, gave them the ball at the 40 to start with some breathing room for their young QB. We never recovered from that start.

We need to keep Scott Blair on kick-offs. I don't care if he doesn't reach the endzone hardly ever.

I've never seen a darn kicker have so many TD saving tackles in my life.

We need a new FG specialist. Hopefully Biggers is the man!

When your kicker has more than a couple of touchdown saving tackles in his career then you have a special teams problem.:ugh:

Under Pepper we had a defensive back doing kickoffs (Don Bessileu). Ironically, we didn't need his defensive skills much to make tackles because most KOs went out of the endzone.

KOs out the back of the endzone > tackling ability since no one has to make a tackle on kickoffs

If you can kick it into the endzone every single time you don't need to worry so much about the kicker making a game saving tackle

That might be true if we were still in the 1970's. They've since added 5 yards of distance to where the kicker tees it up these days.

NOBODY has a guy that consistently puts it in the endzone anymore.

If we're deciding on our kickoff guy based on who is the better tackler than our special teams really are bad. We need the guy who kicks it best, otherwise just let one of the DBs kick it.

Does anyone have any stats on touchbacks? I know that it is the exception to kick a touchback, but some of the old timers think that we just need a better kicker. They are probably the same folks that can remember when it cost a nickel to see the picture show.

I want a kicker that can consistently touchback too, but let's add a dose of reality. Scott Blair's kickoff skills are an extreme upgrade from the previous kicker. Just ask Charles Kelly.

The only touchback stats I could locate were NFL #'s

Evidently, one of the the best ways to get a lot of touchbacks is to play either in the 0% humidity of Arizona or in a dome, with one notable exception.

Morten Anderson's huge 1991 (54% of his kicks going for touchbacks) NO numbers were apparently the first year that the league tracked the touchback stats, as well as being the runaway leader over AZ's Joe Nedney @ 42.5% in 97, Neil Rackers 36.1% in AZ in 05, MN's Mitch Berger's 35.7, however really pales in comparison to Olindo Mare's big 35.8% numbers recorded in the heavy, wet air of Miami (at least half the time, anyway!)

Per the AJC (interesting to me, at least):

"Etc.
Johnson said he is trying to set up a session for Tech’s kickers with Falcons kicker Jason Elam. Johnson has known Elam since recruiting him out of Brookwood High School to the University of Hawaii. … Former athletics director Homer Rice attended practice and spoke to the team beforehand."
