What does Chan need to do to move this program forward?

I've been thinking about what needs to be done to improve on O'Leary/Friedgen's legacy. The fact is that Chan Gailey is being hired at a great time in our history. We've gone to 5 consecutive bowls and we've averaged 8.4 wins per season. Who have we beaten during this 5 year stretch??:

Well.....
We've beaten UGA 3 years in a row for the first time since Billy Lothridge was our QB. And those were all good UGA teams. We've beaten Clemscam 4 times in a row, which is no easy task, even though they had some bad teams during that stretch. Who can forget knocking them out of the top 5 in '00 up in Death Valley? We've won in Chapel Hill twice (98 and 00) for the first time since WWII. We've beaten UNC 4 years in a row. We've regularly beaten the Wolfpunks (4 out of last 5). We've evened up our rivalry with UVA where the home team always wins. Let's not forget that we beat a really good Syracuse squad.

In the bowl games, we destroyed a good Stanford squad. We beat a good ND team and a slow WVU team.

The thing that's missing?....A Win over FSU. If Gailey wants to really get this thing going, we've got to beat FSU. 2001 was the year to do it and it didn't happen for MANY reasons that have been discussed here.

So, Chan, your charge is to beat FSU without slipping against our other rivals. It won't be easy to do either as some of our rivals are improving (UGa, UNC, Maryland, etc) and FSU will move back up but that's why you're paid the big bucks. We're behind you 100% in moving this program forward.

It needs to happen and it CAN happen. There's no reason we can't be the perennial contender that beats FSU here and there and goes to the BCS.

First of all, GREAT thread starter! YES, beating FSU is among the top priorities. Can you imagine a season where we beat UGA AND FSU?!! It's NEVER been done since FSU joined the ACC. THAT would be history.

But breaking it down a bit more, Chan needs to recruit and develop GREAT talent at def. and off. line AND secondary. These are areas that seem to KILL us at crucial times. We were absolutely blown off the ball against Uga AND Fsu this season. Plus, everyone knows our secondary has NEVER been more than adequate. If we can beef up both lines, CONTROL the line of scrimmage, rush the passer with our interior d-line (with guys swatting the ball away) AS WELL as defend the pass we could be perennial top 10! I know this is a TALL order, but if anyone can do it....CHAN CAN!!

In addition to winning the FSU game he needs to beat the snobs in Charlottesville. It seem that he is being deliberate in assembling a good staff which is critical. GO had some really fine coaches
aboard but he had a couple or three that was sub-par and it cost us on the field. I have been impressed thus far with CG.

The important in my post is this: CG was not hired to maintain 8 to 9 wins a season. IMO, he was hired to step it up a level...10...11 wins...wins over FSU.

Maybe not for every year, but for many years. If he maintains the success that we had without improving on GOL/Fridge, then many will be disappointed.

Ultimately, the goal is to win championships. That's the bottom line. It won't happen every year and it may not happen often...but it should be more often than never.

I don't know about you, but these flashback threads always make me a little depressed.

Wait--all we needed to do is have a great offensive line, a great defensive line, knock down the other quarterback's passes, and if he gets them through then defend those passes, and we will succeed? Damn, if someone had told Chan that he might still have his job.

Note that at the beginning of the Chan era, beating UGA was not something that was mentioned as needing to be done to move the program up. We were beating them on a regular basis. That is something CCG couldn't do and didn't seem to consider a top priority and is in itself is one reason why we now have a better football coach at the Flats.

I saw this thread and I had a bad flash back. It was terrible. There were grenades. People were yelling things from the dark. I smelled beej67 up close. I could hear MsTechAnalysis bitching in my ear and Oldfoggy mumbling incoherently. I'm getting dizzy. I need to sit down.

My favorite line was "CG was not hired to maintain 8 to 9 wins a season. IMO, he was hired to step it up a level...10...11 wins" by bugboy...

Wow! The irony!

Go tell yourself in 2002 that in 2008 we'd beat Clemson, Miami, FSU, and UGA and you'd probably **** yourself.

Even better... if you can go back to 2002, offer Braine whatever you need to so you bring DRad and CPJ in BEFORE the ACC went through some relatively weaker years, and tell us NOW how many championships we'd have won in the meantime.

Now where's my dam delorian...

Reggie running the triple option with Calvin at wideout? Tenuta wreaking havoc with his blitz happy defenses when we actually had the talent? Hell yes I would take that.
