Followed the link from the UGA "Make It Rain" blog entry. It was news to me.

Chances are, you still think that Notre Dame is banking major revenue from this agreement in comparison to other teams. Chances are, you're wrong. What do Vanderbilt and Northwestern have in common when it comes to football? Answer: They likely both get more money for their televised football games than Notre Dame does. As does every other team in the Big Ten and the SEC.

That likely means they are stuck with Weiss for a while. A 20 million buyout is pretty expensive.

Don't they get paid a share of BCS revenue even if they don't play in one of the BCS bowl games? And they get to keep the full allotment if they do play in one. They ain't hurting even if their "TV revenue" is slightly less than the per team SEC share.

I don't think so.

This is plenty true. Their royalties on ND related merchandising alone could prop them up indefinitely. And Weiss's buyout isn't going to come out of pocket, it's going to be paid by donors who are sick of him.

I think the main point is that it no longer makes sense financially for them to remain independent. The rationale for so long has been that they didn't want to divide the extra money they got.

Even with their own TV deal, they could be making a little more in a major conference.

If they join a conference, though, would every one of their games be on national TV? That exposure has to be worth a lot.

There's not a respectable conference out there that would allow ND to get an exclusive TV deal just to themselves. The Big east would take them, but if ND joined the Big East, that's a death sentence.

With Weis, yes, but if they got an actual coach, they would be fine.

Any conference in the nation would take them, although I'm sure you're right about the TV thing. That's why ND wouldn't do it. It's a pretty good gig to have every one of your games on national television, even if you get a little less TV revenue.

They are also assured AT LEAST 7 home games a season but I think NBC usually gets them to have 8. They will, every year, play more games at home then on the road. Pretty cooshie when you play.... no one good except USC and get the snot beat out of you every time. Yup, I don't think I'd join any conference either.
