This is a huge pickup. He is highly thought of in coaching circles despite not having a lot of publicity from his high school. He is a more laid back kid off the field from what I gather.

The 6-1, 280 pound DT chose us over FSU, Ole Miss, Auburn, South Carolina, Oklahoma State, Michigan State, Duke, Maryland, Wisconsin, Louisville, and others.

This gives us 9 commits...all from in-state. Chris Jackson did take one of the 85 total we are bumping against next fall, giving us 11 open spots if there were to be no further attrition. We will likely go ahead and take 12 before the season starts and assume at least on casualty through injury, transfer, academics, whatever. In other words, we would take Cornelius, Williams, and White.

....and yes...if Luc were to commit (still a long shot) in October/November we would take the commit and figure it out.

What does that mean? Do we pull someone's offer who's already committed?

How can you sign more guys than you have schollies for assuming they're all academically qualified as Tech does?

I hope it doesn't mean we become like the factories and start pulling schollies from guys already on the team or strongly encouraging "dead wood" guys to quit.

no worries...do you really think we would do something improper? There is always attrition and by the time Luc decides the coaches will all have more insight.

You never want bad things to happen...but they always do. One day Shane Bowen is defensive player of the game....the next day his football career is over.

Things change in a second.
 
No worries dressed cheese side. If at the end of the season we can't make room, we'll just send hiveredtech to follow the football team around and chop block someone in the knee cap since he's been doing it since he was a child. That way we can insure we make enough room.

I have never chop blocked...that is illegal. I cannot help it if my younger brother engaged someone up top that I was going after with a legal cut! :laugher:

in all seriousness....I have seen the youth coaches all the way through high school teach it...albeit differently to disguise it. You engage at pad level and then you drop down and take them out. Happens all the time. I saw one team at the 8-year old level last year have their tackles cut our DE's all day by sliding down. Obviously it does not look as bad as at the college level....but he was taking kids out at the knees...same principle.
 
Has this limit of 12 scholarships taken into account those freed up by people who left the program over the course of the spring (there were at least two). Also, wasn't the original thing Paul Johnson said 12 to 15 scholarships, with the 12 guaranteed?

Almost forgot, have to add this. We are building a kickass future defense.

Tech’s 2010 class is filling up class. it currently only has 12 spots open for next season though that number could grow to 15 or 16 between now and next fall.

And yes that tech quote is verbatim out of the article - punctuation, capitalization, and misused words. I guess Chip Towers was too busy getting on his knees for the gaggers to check any of these issues.

I saw that too. This sort of thing happens every single year for UGA. They get these "juggernaut" recruiting classes yet underperform every time. As long as Reggie Ball, I mean Willie Martinez, is coaching these guys and running the defense, it's wasted talent.
 
i just talked to him on the phone he said he visited and he really liked it so he committed he sounded really excited!!
 
Here is the deal.

We have 81 players on scholarship now with the addition of Chris Jackson. That leaves FOUR open spots.

We have six players on scholaship graduating (Sellers, Voss, Howard, Griffin, Frierson, & Hill). Add SIX more spots and that leaves TEN openings.

We have ONE player that will graduate in June and leave with one year of eligibility remaining...Zach Krish (who knows...there could be others that just have not said anything yet). Add that spot and this brings the total known openings for fall of 2010 as of today to ELEVEN.

That being said...there is always attrition due to injuries, academics, transfer, etc. They are just unknown at this point and there are 12 months before players report in fall of 2010 for this to take place. Based on the odds...which are strong...even though you do not want to lose current players...the coaches are willing to take as many as 13 verbal commits by early fall and then see what happens from there.

Keep in mind, if you always operate at max capacity...you cannot take transfers like Anthony Allen, Chris Jackson, etc...and you cannot reward walk-on's that earned spots. The coaches are willing to do that if necessary for one year (get at capacity) in order to provide more balance in the recruiting numbers from year to year.

Bear in mind as well: All scholies are one-year contracts, and any former walk-on awarded a scholie is aware that it may be rescinded if the need arises. It is a gift to that S-A for his hard work and production as a walk-on.

I'd imagine if push came to shove that one of these guys would get a scholie removed.

I agree, taking it to the max is necessary this year because it has to compensate for the outflow of people we will have after 2010 (and maybe even 2011).

Assuming Krish leaves one year early, that would leave 21 scholarship seniors to account for in next years recruiting class....and that is an EXTREMELY talented group.

As of now, the year after that has 17 scholarship seniors...but the further out you get the more that number will change.

Man. 2011 is going to be a rebuilding year for sure it seems. Seems like its been a LONG while since we had that many scholly Srs.

I knew it was coming after 2010, but when you see it spelled out like that....it is depressing!

Well lets not forget that the seniors of 2011 would of been true freshman last year. There are still a lot of players we have yet to see play who will be contributing to that year. For all we know they could be even better as a team (though maybe lesser in a few individual spots).
