Kind of a wacky idea, but Tech makes the cut

Tech would take a 1-11 record if it meant that one victory was against UGA. Meanwhile UGA has real rivals to deal with other than kicking Tech around 7 out of 8 years.

The problem is that there are tech fans who say that 1-11 is a good season as long as the win was against UGA. I understand the intent, which is that it's the most important game on our schedule year in and year out by far, but from an outsider's perspective it does sort of convey the message that the Georgia game is our super bowl.

I think I understand the 1-11, especially last year because of the seven year drought. But it would be a lot more embarressing for Georgia to lose to a 0-11 team.

No one thinks that's a problem for Texas/Oklahoma, Auburn/Alabama, Michigan/Ohio State, etc. College football is all about the rivalries, that's what makes it so great and passionate. Besides, just because it's the absolute biggest and most important game of the year doesn't mean you don't want to win a conference or national title.

After we win some more, we'll see what UGA's real attitudes towards the game is. I predict pain.

Look at it this way: Which would you prefer? Being undefeated going into the UGA game and losing, or being winless going into it and beating them?

I know that it's evading the question, but neither sounds all that appealing. Sure, beating them would be great but a 1-11 season is still lousy any way you slice it.

I think it's a little different when you have more of a reputation for beating your rival on a more frequent basis and have also accomplished other things recently as well (conference titles, BCS bowls, etc.). Just being realistic, beating UGA last year is probably the biggest accomplishment we've had in several years, other than maybe beating VPI in Blacksburg or Miami when they were ranked #3.

Obviously there is nothing wrong with having a clear cut 'most important game'. All I was saying is that when people indicate that they will be satisfied as long as we win that one game, it doesn't necessarily appear that we are setting the bar real high...I know that that's not really the case, but some may perceive that to be so.
