Great day for football today, and the team was ready to hit. Here's what I noticed, FWIW:

First team D is very fast and quick to the ball. I personally think we 're going to be pleasantly surprised by this group. These guys know our offense, and they make it tough on them, especially up the middle (which is good, no?). Still, after a somewhat slow start, the first team O began to move the ball. By the end, they were moving it well. 2nd and 3rd team O's moved well most of the day. Passing is much more diverse this fall. You can tell they're working a good bit of the R&S. There were several fumbles and bad pitches as the morning wore on, but overall, the O looked good.

Here are some particulars I noted:

QB:
Nesbitt is still clearly the best. He is fast and quick and generally makes good decisions. Seems to me he is operating a bit faster this year. Overthrew some passses, but hit some others. Overall, looked good. He's the man. JS moved the team most of his series, but he just still totes the ball way too much. He's going to get hurt. His helmet must have popped off at least 5 times today after getting hit. Several times, the dive man (who didn't get the ball) went 5 yards before getting hit, while JS kept and got minus yards or a big hit on a 2 yard gain. But he does move the team fairly well when he's in there. He tossd a nice middle screen to Lyons for a TD early in the scrimmage. TW is very athletic, and makes some big plays, but still is thinking his way through. But then, he also is playing with some younger guys who don't know the system as well either. Made some good throws, and some not so good. He made some very nice runs, He may well end up the #2 QB. I hope it's not due to JS being banged up. The rest all had their issues, but we've got some good depth at the position. We have 3 servicable QB's this year.

B-back:
Man, we are loaded at RB! I've never seen a team with this much talent at the position. Dwyer, of course is the man. Cox, Watson, Lyons and Drummond (and not necessarily in order) are all able to tote the rock. Honestly... Drummond looked the best to me. Dude runs HARD. Son, the boy is a load! He's not going to drop one 80 yards like JD can at any time, but I don't know if I saw him stopped for less than 4 yards all day, several times with guys draped all over him. Lyons also looked good. I don't know how we can keep these two guys off the field this year. I was fantasizing about Dwyer and Allen at A-back and Cox, Drummond or Lyons at B.

A-back:
Allen and Wright looked very good - some good runs, and Wright some nice blocks. Peeples made some good runs. Cox made a good run or two. The new guy to watch is Orwin Smith, who made several very nice runs. With Roddy back, we'll probably RS Orwin, but he's going to be a good back in a year or two.

OL:
Lots of shuffling, but the 1st team group looked to be Sellers/Claytor, Gilbert, Voss, Howard and Barrick. Barrick and Claytor both suffered what looked to be minor dings. Overall, much improvement with this group.

WR:
Obviously we have Bebe and Melton starting, but the surprise of the practice (other than maybe Drummond) were the two backups - Quentin Sims and Stephen Hill. Both made several NICE plays. We're suddenly deeper at WR than I've seen us in several years, too (and that's not even mentioning Cone and Moore who both got alot of plays in). Sims is just a player. I saw him make some nice catches last fall, but he's developed into quite the WR. I can see now why they moved Earls to D. The future playmaker, though, is Hill. Wow! What a talent. A couple of times he took a reverse toss and just flat outran everyone to the corner. Speed. He also made a nice catch on an out of bounds ball toward the end. This guy may not can be redshirted this year - he's that good.

DL:
Honestly, I think we'll be fine here. Anderson, Peters, Walls and TJ Barnes are all big, stout guys who can play. They may not be the 3 amigos of the last couple of years, but they can be good. Morgan is Morgan: All ACC in the making.

LB:
This is a very fast, mobile group - especially with Taylor and AT Barnes in there. Jefferson made some big hits today, as did Sed. Those two are good. Barnes played a good bit at wolf along with Taylor, and they looked good. Very, very mobile group. Also saw Sylvester, Machen and Munroe making some good plays. This is a very improved group, but it will be interesting to see how they handle the new alignment.

DB:
This group will be good. Burnett is just a beast. We all know this. Reese made some good plays as did Tarrant. Frierson looked good a time or two, but dropped a sure INT. I think we'll be Ok here, but we really won't know until we play a more pass oriented O. This is, IMO, the downside to this O - your DB's get so little practice against a very good passing game (but we benefit from the tradeoff the other way around).

Overall, for the first week of practice, I was very pleased. Indeed, as we've heard, we are WAY, way ahead of where we were last fall.

You are the man Stinger!
How did Tarrant look? Watching drills this spring, he looked like the most fluid athlete of the corners. Some of the reports I read, said he was working with the second team. Was he still there or working with the 1's?

Tarrant looked good to me. We didn't pass a whole bunch, so it's hard to evaluate them on the few plays each one had. He's a gifted athlete, though, you can just tell. It was either Tarrant or Peterson (IIRC) who was covering Hill on the long pass, and he made a good play to move him out of bounds on the ball. It was close on the sideline, but he was out.

Great upbeat report, Stinger!

We have so many capable A backs and B backs it will be hard for the coaches to figure out how to use them. I'm also intrqued by the idea of putting Dwyer and Allen at A and Watson, Drummond, or Lyons at B. I guess we'll have a lot of role players.

I pleased to read good things about the defensive line. Other than special teams, the interior defensive line would be my biggest worry. Actually, other than special teams, it's my only area of concern.

On Jaybo's keeping it too much: I wonder if he is still mentally playing against high school athletes at times? He sees a hole which he thinks he has the speed to get through, decides to keep it, then college speed collapses the hole. Whatever is causing it, it's time he broke the habit.

I really get excited reading about the receivers and Josh throwing it well. Sims, Hill, or Melton making an impact and knowing what BeBe is capable of makes me shake my head in wonder thinking about this year's potential for scoring.

We may not need Hill this year, but I hope we don't red shirt him. If he is starting to look good after four practices, what might he look like by midseason?

So far, I've read every single article that came out of practice this past week. The name that keep popping up in almost every post-practice article is Stephen Hill and Quentin Sims. It's amazing that Stephen is a true freshman and Quentin is a redshirt freshman. Bebe and Tyler better watch their backs.

On the contrary, the name that I haven't heard very much of out of practice reports is D-Train. Not sure if he's just doing what is expected of him and so coverage about him (other than the recognition/nominations) is slim or what. I hope all the accolades from last year makes him a better player.

Best part of the morning was the botched extrapoint attempt. PJ was at the other end of the field with the offensive unit that was getting ready. when he saw the total break down of that special team unit, he marched down the field telling them to (paraphrasing here) "get back in there, snap the ball, and kick it".

He finished the diatribe with "I'm gonna stick my foot up your ass". With that, the crowd applauded. Classic.

great report. i was out there also and your report is pretty right on.

i am super excited about anthony allen. he was a highlight player today, but you can just tell the kid is a gamer. orwin did indeed beast it up today. it was quite impressive.

i also agree with your points about hill. the kid is going to be awesome and i seriously doubt we rs him. the aj green comparison is pretty fair. we will figure out a way to get this kid the ball as you saw today.

jaybo actually made me feel better today. i have never been on the jaybo wagon, but i feel more comfortable now if we were to need him. he's made big improvements, but like you said he keeps it too much.

god im ready for the season to get here.

oh yeah another thing. the jumbotron looks AWESOME. blew me away. and it wasnt even turned on.

as far as the jerseys go. they have the ones with the "new" gold at the bookstore. i hope all you puds crying for a different gold are happy. they look nowhere near as good. the gold is too light and just seems to blend in with the white. if we are going to use this gold we needs to change the jersey style.

I second this, how's he doing?

I would like to hear too, but my guess is that since the coaches know what JD can do, they are using the early practices to see what some of the other guys can do.

I think that we see plenty of JD when it counts, but it is good to hear that we may have some pretty nice depth in the RB positions. I really think that DD is going to continue to climb the depth chart and will be surprised if he does not play this year.

I wouldn't be surprised only because our depth at the B back position is just that damn good.

Can we lay off the initials and post the last names. Jaybo Shaw isn't popular enough to be called "JS". Who the **** is TW? I swear, I had to go to the damn ramblinwreck website just to figure out you were talking about Tevin Washington.

Two things I hate and GT fans are notorious for doing it. 1.) Gay Mother ****ing Nicknames and 2.) Affectionate abrieviations of someone's initials.

I can understand if you call Calvin Johnson CJ, or Johnathan Dwyer, JD. Even if you call Nesbitt, JN... these I'll accept... but ****ing Jaybow Shaw is Jaybo Shaw and not JS. Tevin Washington = TW??? Are you ****ing kidding me? Dammit why don't you ****ing write this in Morse code?

Wow, was the Great Yellow Jacket Encounter event this big last year? This looks like a sizable crowd.

Question for Stinger and Lambda

How is pass protection looking? I haven't seen any posts about quarterbacks not being able to get the passes off, so my guess is it's okay. Or is it more that the kind of pass plays we're running aren't the kind you can easily rush?

If it seems over the top, it is. I have to fight the good fight to the people who would like none other than to march our guys out on the field with "He Hate Me", "Diesel" and "JD" on the back of their jerseys. This isn't the ZBT house.

Hey BOR...

Next time YOU go to the practice and write the darn thing up. You'll see how tired you get of typing these guy's names 5 times each.
