Heather Dinich's latest opinion

They'll still be better than they were last year, and they won it last year, so....

They'll still be better than they were last year, and they won it last year, so....

I hate that logic. They "won" it cause they played pretty good in one game, the ACC championship game. What everyone ignores is that they very much backed into that game. Every other team in the division besides Duke held the leading conference record at one point.

As for Dinich's statement. They might still be favored to win the Coastal, but now it makes that game in Atlanta that much more important. I think the most likely scenario is that we will only lose 2 ACC games next year and will probably be favored in our game over VPI. The reason people who have predicted this still don't have us in Tampa is that they don't see VPI losing to any other ACC team, which I can understand because they'll be favored at home and their away conference schedule is cake. However, now a prediction of a one conference loss VPI is not as solid.

Nobody expected much from us last year and things worked out fine. Let's not get too worked up about being slighted. I kind of like it better that way.

Can we please just beat the !@#$%^&*( out of them this year and shut all the haters up?

I agree w/ you Jacket67. I like being "under the radar."

My "rant" above wasn't about us being slighted, it was about the idea that "Well if VT can win the ACC on a down year then they must be great the next year!"

Just wanted to point out that even though they won the ACC it isn't anything like, say, the way Florida won the SEC.

However, I really dislike it when people talk about how they like us flying under the radar. You think Florida or Texas or USC fans prefer their teams flying under the radar for fear of underachieving? It's not that we need to think like we're badass, but one point if we desire our team to reach a higher level of success then the team will have to have the mental fortitude to both start and finish in the top 10.

By using this logic; East Carolina beat VPI last year, so they should beat VPI this year and thus should be ACC champs. Or, Georgy beat UF in 07, so they should have been SEC champs last year.

I mostly agree, but I have no problem with being under the radar this year, winning the ACC, and having the high expectations set for us next year and every year beyond that.

I predict if we don't get any Helmet to Helmet or chop block penalties, we'll win!

Let's break down the schedule for VT last year

August 30 vs. East Carolina* L 27-22
Pathetic. ECU turns out to be more pretender than contender as the season unravels.

September 13 Georgia Tech W 20-17
Win on questionable helmet to helmet call on TT. Roddy Jones is inches away from making a game winning TD. GT fumbles with 1 minute left in the 2nd half which VT ends up getting 7 points off of.

September 20 at North Carolina W 20-17
Again more questionable calls let VT win.

September 27 at Nebraska W 35-30
Nebraska wasn't great last season.

October 18 at Boston College L 28-23
A loss. What a surprise. VT was not that great.

October 25 at No. 25 Florida State L 30-20
A loss to a team that was far superior last year and will be far superior this year.

November 6 No. 23 Maryland W 23-13
Maryland had schizophrenia.

November 13 at Miami (FL) L 16-14
Pathetic. Miami sucked.

November 22 Duke W 14-3
14 points. 14 freaking points off of duke. Pathetic.

November 29 Virginia W 17-14
Lucky again.

December 6 vs. No. 17 Boston College* W 30-12
Probably the best win of the season for VT.

January 1 vs. No. 12 Cincinnati* W 20-7
Playing the winner of the big east is like racing the winner of the 100m dash at the special olympics.

That is the most intelligent thing you've ever posted Kyle, and I agree with it 100%. VPISU got worse as the year went on. The only thing that they have going from them is that they have an easy ACC schedule. Somehow, Bud Foster has a better defense after losing his best player, and the VPISU offense is basically Tyrod Taylor, who looks more like Reggie Ball than Michael Vick. And it's not hard to beat the special teams of VPISU when we're not punting the ball.

Why do we care if we're favorites, and why would anyone pick against the team that's won it 3 of the last 4 years? Get a grip guys, we haven't earned it yet.

Hahaha. Wow. I have never seen a 10 win BCS winning season painted in such a bad light as Kyle's post.

I don't think it has anything to do with them winning it in a down year, then they should win it this year.

VT is a proven winner. All they've done is win football games year after year since they've joined the ACC. They're well coached and a very good team.

We haven't earned anything. They certainly have.

I'm with you on flying under the radar. It's great when you can have success, everyone is pointing at you as the team to beat, and you still win.

To be fair to Kyle, I've never seen a 10 win BCS season as bogus as VT's last year. :)

Yes, apparently they only had one actual win, and 9 others that were other lucky, bad calls, or against crappy teams. They really deserved to be 1-11! That's just the type of reffing/scheduling/gameday luck that we just don't seem to get...the kind that separates the 1-11 teams from the BCS bowl teams.

You can't really argue his logic though. It's all correct. The wins that VPISU had that weren't close games aided by sketchy officiating were mostly against crap teams. The Duke game and the UVA game showed a team that wasn't very good. Duke almost won that game. UVA almost won that game, with the ACC title on the line.

I'm wary of the rampant Kool-Aid ingestion around here, because he had some very close games last year. But if I was a VPISU fan, I'd be even more worried. But I have half a brain, so I'm not.

The only reason VT rallied and beat UVA last year is that I prayed to God no less than 45 times that I would gladly take a comeback victory over the Dawgs in exchange for failing to make the ACCCG.
