Hokies are the best in the ACC!

I'll be the first to admit that we could lose to Vanderbilt. We could lose to JSU or Duke too. But I don't understand predictions that we will win 9-10 games and perhaps lose to Vanderbilt, and I have seen these more than once. When did everyone get together and decide that Vanderbilt was some sort of mysterious threat? They lost to Duke, Wake Forest and Mississippi State last year. Last year, we beat three teams that beat Vanderbilt. Vanderbilt is not that good. In their last 8 games last season, do you know how many points they scored per game? 14.5. Can we not come up with three touchdowns against Vanderbilt? If we can't, there are a LOT of teams we are going to lose to.

They also beat BC in their bowl game who was certainly on the same level as GT last season. I think Vandy is a "trap" game because the players (hopefully not the coaches) could underestimate them and not prepare or play at 100% until its too late. I think GT will be much better than Vandy next season but that does not guarantee a win. Add to that that it is an away game it just doesn't sit right.

Honestly, I think anyone could realistically win the Atlantic, and the only 2 teams that would be considered a far fetch for the Coastal are Duke and UVA. I also think that VT will be a dissapointment OOC, but have been lucky enough to win the conference 3/5 years that they have been in it. Maybe luck will continue to be on their side but I doubt it. This will be our year.

The straight apples to apples never works in CFB. Theoretically we should have what it takes to beat Vandy. We should have what it takes to put up more than 3 TD's against vandy...but then again we had what it took to put up more than 3 TD's against Gardner Webb and we failed to do that.

I am overlooking NO ONE on our schedule. And since I am not overlooking anyone, you guys don't have to worry. GT will also not overlook them. ;)

I'm kind of a big deal.

Anything could happen, but I just don't understand why there are so many folks who will just casually pencil in wins against Clemson and Wake Forest and MSU but look at Vandy as some kind of threat. If Vandy is a threat, what is Clemson? The 1989 San Francisco 49ers?

A team we play at home, on a Thurs night, during a white out, first real game of the season. Just for the record. As for Vandy, a lot of it has to do with timing. When we go to play them the only thing standing between us and Tampa might be WF and Duke.

If you look at my original post I predicted we would drop one to either Clemson or Miami, so I certainly think Clemson is a threat. Wake will probably be better than Vandy next season, but not by much at all. The thing is I doubt anyone will underestimate Wake because it is an ACC game and they beat us in the ACCCG in '06 so we will have a bit of a chip on our shoulder. I just think the players might get overconfident and not prepare 100% or have an eye turned to the next week when it comes to Vandy.

As far as MSU goes, I lump them in the same category as Duke and JSU next season so you could say I am penciling in a win for them.

I said this in another thread, but I highly doubt Paul Johnson will allow his players to lose focus in an out-of-conference game, unlike the last guy. If we lose to Vandy, it will be because of injuries, or because Vandy was the better team that day.

I have no doubt that PJ will not lose focus but its hard to get in the head of a bunch of 20 year old kids. If anyone can do it PJ can.

I should have been clear that I wasn't responding directly to you. I'm responding to what has emerged as the widely-held belief that for some reason the Vanderbilt game is more dangerous than most of our other games. I happen to think this is a bunch of bullcrap.

Oh now I understand. The Vandy game is more of a threat than the Clemson game because the Clemson game will be a "white out."
:pat:

Well that seemed pretty affective against Miami, but who am I to judge.

I know that you don't seriously believe that the reason we beat Miami was that 70% of our fans wore white shirts. If you seriously believed that, you shouldn't be the judge of anything.

Maybe he was implying the home field energy created from the fact it was a nationally televised game where we had a whiteout was the cause.

When fans have something 'special', they feel more motivated to cheer.

The point of my prediction is not that Vanderbilt is better than GT. That's kind of missing the point. I think we have about a 70-80% chance of beating them, and I think our chances of beating a lot of teams is about that high. It is a prediction. That's what these posts are for.
