Have you ever bet for or against your team before? I know that the old adage is to not bet on a team that you are emotionally invested in.

However, what if you "believe" a point spread to be off on a game involving your team. Do you bet for or against anyway?

Why would one ever bet against their own team?

****'s low, broseph.

I made $500 off of our bowl loss off of our bowl loss in Boise a couple years ago. I've made smaller sums several times when we won, but I've never been as sure as that one. My biggest GT victory was like $100 when we played at ND.

I think the old adage is stupid. Your team is the one you know best, so you'll be able to spot the advantageous lines.

I've bet for and against Tech a number of times. I even bet on UGA in 07.

Economically speaking I tend to find it a bad idea. Not fiscal economics, but emotional economics. There are several possible outcomes that have to be examined.

Bet for your team (Favored):

Team Wins and Covers - Maximum Happiness
Team Wins and Misses Cover - Happy about win, upset over lost money.

Bet for your team (Underdog):

Team Wins - Maximum Happiness
Team loses and Covers - Upset about loss, happy over won money

Bet against your team (Favored):

Team Wins and Misses Cover - Happy about win, happy over won money, upset about having to pick moments where you rooted against your team to score

Team Wins and Covers - Happy about win, upset over lost money

Team Loses - Upset over loss, happy about won money

Bet against your team (Underdog):

Team Wins - Happy about win, upset over lost money
Team Loses and Covers - Upset over loss, upset over lost money
Team Loses and Misses Cover - Upset over loss, happy about won money, upset about having to pick moments where you rooted against your team

So out of 10 possible outcomes, only 2 of them will help you to achieve maximum happiness and they can ONLY occur when you bet on your team.

This discussion came up today at work. Well, the adage stems from not being able to remove your emotions when analyzing if your team is too big of a favorite or underdog, etc.

You can certainly make a bunch of $$$ if you "knew" which team from a BCS conference could give two craps less about their MWC/WAC/Sun Belt, etc. opponent in the Emerald Nuts or Boise Bowl game.;)

The follow up question is if betting against your team, how did you feel watching the game? Bad because your team was playing like doo-doo (against Utah/Fresneck St.) or happy because you benefit economically? Or does the extra $$$ console you over several beers?:D

Three times.

1. GT vs. Auburn at home

2. GT vs. Syracuse in Champs Bowl

3. GT vs. Army in 2007

I went 3-3

I've never bet on sports before...but that's something that I've often thought about.

Yes, you are emotionally invested in your own team and could make a crass decision...but you also know that team better than any other, which theoretically means you are able to make an educated decision.

Meh. I'll stick to poker.

Automatic......every time in Vegas, I bet for GT and against ugag, no matter who either is playing or the line.

GoldZ you are my hero.

Champ aka Chump you are the devil. I bet youre gonna wear blue tomorrow.

I was happy. I knew the players were going to play like they didn't care, so I might as well make some money off of it.

Hey man...gotta be able to separate business from emotions if you're gonna bet. Doesn't mean he's a Yetman.
