If you don't think this is big, well, **** you. ESPN never even mentioned this. This came out of the annals of the mind of my buddy who was told by Peyton Manning directly that he knows more about the Colts team than does Peyton Manning...Anyway, read on...

1998 I-AA National Championship Game. Mark Whipple, head coach of UMass beat Paul Johnson's Georgia Southern 55-43.

And guess who Whipple is now...

...

...?

Offensive Coordinator of Miami.

Fact is Whipple has huge experience against Paul Johnson, whether on defense or offense. He helped stop us along with our sh***y defense.

Whipple is one of the few who beat PJ when it counted. Holy Santa Claus sh**.

ESPN did mention this and whipple didn't beat CJ he beat Wommack

We didn't hear it for whatever reason... nevertheless, that's still some crucial insight to have on your side.

Whether it be offense or defense, Whipple knew PJ's tendencies and not just Wommack's.

Yah...Pretty sure the OC Whipple didn't out coach the OC Johnson.

I'm not sure how I feel about 'outcoaching' in this game....definitely out-playing by the players.

Head coaches looked like they had pretty good respect for one another....last yr and this yr didn't see a run up in score. Both renewing programs with strong histories.

There's something to be said in that he understands the overall PJ approach to football. Whether I-AA or I-A level, he's put up 55 points against a PJ team.

Sorry, I just don't get this. Butch Davis beat PJ too. Does he also have PJ figured out?

Nobody has us "figured out" but our brilliant coaches also don't have everyone else figured out. We can be the asskicker or the asskickee any given game. And it's not a battle of wizards out there. What did Lombardi say? Football is two things: blocking and tackling.

Defense sucked so much wind I think that resource has been exhausted, hope wommack can do something good or else I don't see him staying long. Terrible defense, can't argue that. Flame me all you want, hit harris a few times and hes done.

Doesn't Wommack called his defense "controlled chaos" or something like that? I guess that's half right. Where's the control part? I see plenty of chaos though.

1998 the 14-0 GSU beat themselves with turnovers (seven?) against umASS to finish the season 14-1

This makes no sense. So what we need to do is figure out a way to play Ohio State in a BCS game then, since PJ owned Younstown in their championship games? Whipple is a very good coach. Why does it have to be more than that?

1 Book of Coach 13:1-13
If I speak in the tongues of men and angels,
but have not players,
I have become sounding brass or a tinkling symbol.
And if I have prophecy and know all mysteries and all knowledge,
and if I have all faith so as to remove mountains,
but have not players, I am nothing.
And if I dole out all my goods, and
if I deliver my body that I may boast
but have not players, nothing I am profited.

I am reminded of old ST threads about what's more important, coaching or players?

Mr. Whipple really wiped us out.

I'm not saying that we always lose to Whipple and therefore we should play OSU because PJ beat Youngstown...

It's simply an interesting wrinkle of this game...that's all.

I don't consider it a primary reason why we got our butts handed to us, but it certainly doesn't help anything.
