Salvaging the season

Putting the Miami game in a box and hiding it in a dark closet, now what? Going forward what do you consider an acceptable season? Winning out? Winning season which includes victories over the mutts, the hokies, and a win finally in Charlottesville? Winning the division and getting to the ACCCG? For me, I'd like to beat VPI and Georgia, and show some sign that we are back to improving the performance of the team week-to-week-to-week. Winning the division, while not impossible, seems far-fetched to me. Another runner-up divisional finish, with some quality wins along the way will get us into a better bowl position for recruiting and national exposure for next year.

id be happy with a win over VPI and UGAy, and also going to a bowl game of course.

Seven wins would leave a sour taste.

Eight wins would leave me content.

Nine wins would leave me feeling like GT didn't let down.

I don't know. To me, this is a hell of a tough question. It's hard for me to even tell what is a reasonable goal anymore. I think that I would have to say right now that losing the UNC game would be a bigger disappointment to me than losing any other game. If we beat the Heels, I think we have a shot at 8 wins, which I think would be a good -maybe even great- year all things considered. If we lose to them, the goal becomes to keep the bowl streak alive.

Honestly, my biggest goal right now is to keep the Chan era negativity away from the program so that Coach Johnson can have his best shot to get the program to the level I know he aspires to.

IMO, our defense is too bad to win the Coastal...here's what I'd like to see.

1. End the curse in Charlottesville.
2. Beat Georgia.
3. Win bowl game.

Beat mutts. I'm happy.

national title is out of the question (not realistic anyways, but 120 teams all get to hope for it at start of season), win the state.

Beat mutts and finish with > 8 wins, and I'm very pleased with the season.

Disappointment: Lose to UGA OR finish with 8 or less total wins

Indifferent: Beat UGA, 8-4 regular season with bowl win OR 9-3 regular season with close bowl loss to good team

Content: Beat UGA, 9-3 regular season with bowl win OR 10-2 regular season with close bowl loss to good team

Happy: Beat UGA, 9-3 regular season with bowl win OR 10-2 regular season with close bowl loss to good team AND play for the ACC championship.

Awesome: Beat UGA, any combination of 11+ total wins, and win the ACC

Biblical: All of the above plus play for the National Championship and beat the mutts by 50.

I still have high expectations for this team.

I should add that I felt the same way about all of these before the season began. A loss isn't the end of the world.

I should say so! I commend you for your spirit.:laugher:

That's pretty close to my list as well, I have the same 3 goals except in the order of "2, 3, 1".

If we could win out at home games, I would be ecstatic. It's important to see the team grow throughout the season, but I'd say this is more of a "must", not so much a goal to consider the season a "success".

My God, I will be doing cartwheels down the road if we accomplish all that this year.

But I do admire your standards and I'm willing to bet that the guy at the helm has them too.

I say its indifferent because that is basically repeating last season's performance. If we are supposed to be a better team then one would logically expect to win more games. I still think we are overall a better team. So I would like to see that manifested with more wins.

We still ought to beat Vandy, MSU, Duke, WFU and UVA. That's 7 wins. We still ought to win at least one of VT, UNC or UGAG. That's 8 wins. Probably won't beat FSU this year unless some things seriously change.

Optimistically I would like to beat 2 of FSU, VT and UNC and definitely UGA. Only beating 1 of FSU, VT, and UNC won't be the end of the world but it will practically lock us out of the championship game. The season would leave a bad taste in my mouth even if we won the ACC and lost to UGAy (besides the obvious, we'll have to deal with "so the best team in the ACC can't even beat the 5th/6th best team in the SEC?")

Isn't that a life sentence, tho? Will we ever be at a point where a loss to Georgia is adequately counterbalanced by an ACC championship? Not for me. And I think our muttly friends have the same problem. They can talk about their ultimate goal being winning the SEC, but I think losing to Tech smarts a little more than they like to admit.

We're already salvaging the season? We're you expecting to go undefeated this year?

Christ Yukon, take a break from posting. You're seriously embaressing yourself and whatever credibility you have left around here is dying.

Yeah, the title of this thread is pathetic. We lost one game, one flippin game.

7 or 8 wins with a loss to ugag will be a step back considering second year with staff and large no. of returning players, including FOUR future likely first round picks.

Since Josh is a Jr., it looks like our break-out year will be the second year of who ever replaces him. By then, ALL the cards will be on the table. New QB with some experience, new OL, new DL, mostly new LBs, and a coaching staff in it's 5th year with the probability of a new DC. If we can't pass for a buck fifty or so and keep people from scoring more than a TD per Qtr. by then, well, time to rethink.

If this schedule is to be 1 or 2 years sooner, it will be apparent Saturday.
