The Yellow Jackets said goodbye to B-back Jonathan Dwyer in the second half of last week’s game after he suffered a stinger before halftime. Usually some kind of pinched nerve injury, stingers are a common football injury that affects a person’s nervous system. According to Tech officials, he was fit enough to return to action last Thursday but didn’t as precaution. Besides (and this is your beat writer speaking), the Yellow Jackets were down and their momentum had completely left them by the point Dwyer was taken out of the game. He was being stopped (had just 7 yards on five carries), and didn’t seem to be a factor. So whether he was in the game or not, Tech was still probably going to lose the game.

The injury appears to have been somewhat serious, though, as Dwyer was sporting a red injured player jersey during practice Sunday afternoon. After the workout, head coach Paul Johnson said he wasn’t sure how many practices Dwyer would miss but that the team “expected him to be back” for the North Carolina game this Saturday at Bobby Dodd Stadium.

The Yellow Jackets’ performances on defense and special teams forced them to have to shift some things around entering this weekend’s game, apparently.

Johnson said Sunday that defensive lineman Logan Walls had worked his way up the depth chart, and will start Saturday at defensive tackle in place of Jason Peters. At defensive end, Anthony Egbuniwe will replace the injured Hall. Johnson also said some of his freshmen longsnappers will “get a look” in practice this week as Georgia Tech looks to mix things up in the field goal and punting games.

That is disappointing. We were still in that game going into the second half, all it takes is one long run and it's a one possession game.

Really hurt or just a wuss? We may never know.

Yeah, I think that's why CPJ blew a fuse at the false start on our 2 pt conversion attempt. He knew that if we could make it a 16 pt game, then the guys might start acting like the UGA game. Instead, we got a stupid penalty, which was killing us all game (in addition to the Miami O).

Symptoms of nerve impingement can come from something minor or something very dangerous. Coaches have to make a judgement call, and it will be their responsibility if things turn out bad. Being cautious was a wise decision. Are you calling JD a wuss???!!!!

Mix things up in field goal and punting? I don't know how to interpret that. It seems like we are doing better this year than last year at special teams (besides the bad snap in the Miami game), so why would we want to mix things up?

Our punting has been absolutely atrocious. And if we have to make a FG from outside 35, might as well go for it. Not the kind of kicker you want.

+1. They took away JD's helmet, and that means to me that this was a coaching/trainer decision more than a "wuss" player decision.

What are all you people throwing JD off the train going to do when you lose your diesel?

That's a poor attempt to tell you all to leave JD alone in a funny way.

I fear you will be waiting a long, long time before you see Georgia Tech perform like an Eric Crouch-led Nebraska team.

This may be an unpopular opinion but a couple of false starts in a game can be blamed on the players - but 10 is coaching. Someone or several someones were doing something to tip Miami off - after being beat on the snap on almost every play our players became antsy resulting in the false starts (it wasn't particularly loud in there so our players shouldn't have had any trouble hearing the snap count).

That or they were all smoking weed before the game.

Wouldn't that have caused Delayed Starts, not False Starts?

It would cause us to look tired.

It would cause us to forget what the snap count is, and go on the wrong one.

It would cause us to get mixed up on who our blocking assignments are supposed to be, and on who's supposed to be covering who in the secondary.

It would cause us to play without fire or motivation.

Sound familiar? In short, it would cause us to look like we did vs Utah in the Emerald Bowl.

I'm not accusing our team of being stoned for the Miami game, but it's the explanation that makes the most sense to me given what I saw.

You might want to relook at the game. We made it a 16 point game with the one point conversion. I thought going for 2 at that point made no sense anyway because 1 15 point game is still 2 possession while missing it makes it a 17 point 3 possession game.
