Coley's take on Sunday Practice

You might want to relook at the game. We made it a 16 point game with the one point conversion. I thought going for 2 at that point made no sense anyway because 1 15 point game is still 2 possession while missing it makes it a 17 point 3 possession game.

I disagree with this philosophy. I believe late in games you get the extra conversion as soon as possible, so that you know whether or not you have to go for an extra score.

Imagine this. You're down 15 late. You get a touchdown. The scenarios:

1.) You go for two and make it. You're down 7. Only need to score and get an easier conversion to tie it.
2.) You go for two and miss it. You're down 9. Now you know you need two scores and can try and compensate with the time left.

*The next two scenarios assume you make the one point kick.

3.) Down 8, you score a TD. You make the 2 pt conversion, and everything looks golden, tie game.
4.) Down 8, you score a TD. You miss the 2 pt conversion. Now you're down 2 and have MUCH less time on the clock, but still have to score again.

I'd rather know if I need to score again as early as possible. Does it really make a difference when you go for 2? Is your offense going to be different/better calling it later rather than earlier?

You have to go for 2 anyway if you're down by 16, so might as well get it out of the way. If you miss, then you can kick extra points from there on out, since you know you'll need three possessions no matter what for 17.

I think it was a momentum thing. We had them set up with a play with a high chance of success and needed to both raise our confidence and shake theirs a bit.

the chances of making 2/2 two point conversions is lower than the chances of making 2/3.

Yeah, your right. I had in my mind that we were down by 24, not by 23 before we got the TD.

But going for two three times and succeeding twice only gets you 22 points (8 + 8 + 6) and we needed 23. You have to make ALL of your two point tries in this scenario, (2 for 2 plus a one point conversion for the tie, 3 for 3 for the win), not two out of three.

No, in either case you have to make two 2 point conversions and an extra point. The difference is, if you go for 2 right away, you know right away if you need three possessions instead of two. You guys are thinking too hard about this.

This I totally agree with. Plus the fact that going for 2 to tie the ballgame, when the crowd would be going crazy and the defense would be jacked up, would probably be tougher than going for 2 to get within 16 and then to get within 8.
