Bill Curry....what do you think of him?

I went to high school with Curry's sister. He was like a god to me when I was growing up. He played for Tech, he went pro and played for the Packers, Colts, and Rams. He came back to coach at Tech. And then he left GT for Alabama. I really soured on him when he did that until I learned that CBD advised him to do it. In hindsight, I think he would have been very successful at GT, but Alabama is definitely a step into the bright lights, and he was right to take it.

I think he's a class act and I wish him well. He's truly a "Tech Man," kind of in the Kim King sense of the word.

Having said all that, I don't think he should have gotten the AD job, for the same reasons already stated. It's much better to have someone who is a great sports businessman, a la DRAD. I think DRAD is great and I hope he sticks around for a while.

I wish CBC the best at Ga. State. If we become as good as I think we will, then we will be Atlanta's college team for the forseeable future. I'm not worried about GSU. They might have a larger alumni base, and eventually more money, but they will never have the heritage, and reputation, and quality of academics we have, and moreover, they will never have CPJ.
 
I think Bill Curry is a helluva coach and a helluva good man. I wish him well at GSU.
 
I would imagine a large portion of the alumni at GSU could care less about the creation of a football program. Also, many of the current students are either older people who are taking night classes or students who chose to go to a school like State in order to avoid the usual 'college town' atmosphere, i.e. they don't really care about being at a school with a football team. Their program may be successful one day, but it's a long way away. As long as they are FCS or in a lower tier FBS conference, they are no major threat to GT IMO.
 
Any chance Dodd advised Curry to leave in order to help both Curry and Tech? While it may be true that going to Bama was the right thing for Curry at the time, it was also the best thing for Tech. Just putting that out there.
 
I was heavily against him as the successor to Dave Braine. I thought we'd go to hell in a handbasket under his leadership. That's not to say that I don't respect Bill Curry, but he has or at least HAD the mindset that GT is a program that can only expect so much, and we needed new blood. His career as a coach was largely mediocre and quite honestly, he left us once because his Coach Bobby Dodd felt like you could no longer win at GT. I don't want a guy like that near the program.

As a coach I think he did a fantastic job given the scenario he inherited, but honestly, the moon and the stars were aligned perfectly in GT's favor when Bama came calling.

I might believe that if Bobby Dodd didn't manage athletics at GT like it was a "Going Out of Business" sale. I have and will always maintain that Bobby Dodd, for as much as he did for GT, harbored an attitude as the Athletic Director that was definitively behind the falling of GT athletics from glory. It has taken us years to recover from that.

Don't get me wrong. Dodd is still a legend to me, but I don't let legendary status get in the way of truth.

That might be possible. CBC's last season was not that great, but in general he was on an upward trend. I still think he would probably have been successful over the long run at GT. Hindsight is 20/20. As it was, CBR came along, and the rest is history.
 
I have always had great respect for Bill Curry and always will.

I just can't harbor petty animosities because someone leaves GT's employ. They have to do what they think is in their and their family's best interests. Maybe they make the right call; maybe they make the wrong call - but it's THEIR call to make. I'll respect it whatever it is.

Bill Curry is class. Bill Curry is old school. Bill Curry is a Dodd man and a 'Tech man' way before being a Tech man meant being a geek or a nerd. One of the finest products Coach Dodd and the Institute ever produced. All-America, All-Pro, played for Dodd, Shula and Lombardi and with unfailing loyalty both to the Alma mater and to young people wherever he has been called to serve. In hindsight, his biggest flop was leaving Tech for bama but on the advice of Coach Dodd one has to wonder would Bobby Dodd have left? Could be. I've always liked Bill Curry and think what he's trying to do for State is perfectly honorable and in keeping with his true character. A fine man. A TECH man.

I feel for you younger cats. You'll just never know.

All I can add is that Bill Curry remains, to this day, the most impressive man I have ever met.

Tell you a little story. My dad was friends with a Georgia player from that era. Circa 1964. He said that Curry was a great center. Smart, quick off the ball. Just tough as nails. Some of you may have forgotten or not realized just how bad things were around the Institute when Curry took the coaching job. The facilities were probably among the worst in the country combined with little talent and the academic restrictions. Bill Curry, with whatever faults he may have had, saved this program.

I was there when he took the job. I had a lot of friends on the team that went to the AA bowl in 85. I don't have a problem with Curry. I did when he left but got over it about 13 seconds after we hired Ross.

I agree that he did us a world of good. He was the complete opposite of Pepper and was exactly what we needed exactly when we needed it. But he went about as far as he ever would have by the end of the 1986 season. That last game against Wake Forest iced it for me.

I wish nothing but wild success for the guy but like many others here - I was dead set against his campaign for the AD slot. I think GSt is perfect for him.

Homer Rice did a TON more to save the program than Curry.
