Do you think CPJ is involved in the defense this week?

I'm sure when CPJ brought on Dave Wommack he told him "you just take care of the D, and I'll take care of the O". But with the recent results, do you think CPJ has had to involve himself with the defense this week?

I'm hoping not...I don't know that CPJ would exactly be a whiz at knowing how to go about creating a defensive game plan....here's hoping he's just set down a pretty stern message that the D-coaches need to fix this themselves and allow CPJ to focus on the O.

Wasn't he Defensive Coordinator at Ga Southern under Erk?
 
I could be wrong...I thought he coached the D-tackles or D-ends for a year or two. But he's been an OC at least since about 1985ish. I really hope the D can fix things themselves....
 
My take on it is he must know a thing or two about defense if for no other reason than he can see a defensive scheme and then counter it offensively... Plus I think part of the problem is CDW has a plan, but he's trying to be too gimmicky on defense and our players aren't learning it very well and getting burned in the process. This on-the-job training for the defense isn't working out so well... Who knows, maybe he knows what he is doing but there's a learning curve to it (much like there's a learning curve to PJ's scheme).
 
Make no mistake about it. PJ is involved in every part of this team from top to bottom. I'm sure he's calling the shots on D.

Sure, he knows something about a defense. But, in the same token...I don't want him involved in the scheming...same as I wouldn't want Steve Spurrier or Urban Meyer or Kirk Ferentz helping with the D.
 
In the manner that he's a dictator and in complete control. I'm sure he lets wommack call most of the shots D, just as long as he agrees with those shots.

Here's hoping it didn't take us almost losing to FSU for him to do that when the problem has been apparent for a while now. I think the time for "stern messages" has passed...it's time for some drastic action, such as PJ getting more involved. We've already seen that the other way just isn't working.
 
I have a feeling that he is getting into it. I think that they should make the defense simply as they can. In an interview, CPJ said that the D was telling them that whenever they went to make a play, they had to think about what they had to do and their coverages before acting on it. Against UNC they said it was just instinct and no complexities.

I just hope that it's not a learned reaction now to think "wait, what am I supposed to do here" before acting on it. I want our guys to go out and do what they do. Tarrant runs it back for TDs, Burnett makes 2 or more INTs, D-Mo gets several sacks, and the line GETS SOME PRESSURE on TT

is egbuniwe back?
 
Paul Johnson was definitely a defensive coordinator at Ga Southern.

I think PJ should have a huge influence on the D. Wommack should know by now that he has the rest of the season to get it together or he's gone so maybe he'll pull it out.

See Clemson for what happens when a HC decides he's going to call the plays for a coordinator. Bad move.

There's no way that PJ calls the plays at all on defense, but you can be he's on those headphones telling Wommack that he needs to get the job done.

The coordinators get together to talk over their plans every week with the HC, and I'm sure PJ has questions, concerns, and ideas. But come gameday, it's for Wommack to execute. If he doesn't, he'll lose his job.

By the way, it's "Rules" and not "Rulz".

PJ is not calling the defensive plays. What I have seen is PJ call timeouts because he didn't like the way the players were lining up after the call came onto the field. We've seen this all season and his frustration is evident. That's not him calling plays, that's making sure that our guys are doing what they're supposed to do in the play.

I also think it was probably PJ who ended the failed experiment with Reid playing safety.

That's an interesting thought, the whole Reid thing. Ultimately, the HC is in charge of everything, right? The timeout issue is a HC's job, although he may be getting feedback from Wommack in the booth, too. I think PJ is going to participte alot on the teaching side (see: Jason Peters tutorial on the sideline) and the game management side, but not from a play calling or game planning side. The game plan has to pass his litmus test, but he's no going to create it.

I agree with your comment on his frustration - that's one of the best things about PJ in my book...he wears it on his sleeve. The announcers love it too, they're always talking about how PJ is pissed that we're not perfect. Love it.

CPJ was the defensive coordinator for Erk Russell at GA Southern and was asked by Erk to take over the offense, he knows both sides of the ball if he didnt he could not make adjustments on the fly.
