I dont know if this has been mentioned, but with all the talk of burnett going pro, does anyone think that the addition of a former NFL DC will persuade burnett to stay for another year? I dont know the specifics the 3-4 and how it will affect him, but seems like playing another year under a DC who could actually coach him up may be a plus. Thoughts?
 
Burnett is leaving for financial reasons because of having a kid, thats the report anyways, so if thats his reason for leaving Groh getting hired shouldnt make a difference
 
Losing MB will suck, but hopefully with the 3-4 we will have a more athletic front 7 meaning that we will need less safety help in the box. I think Reese/Coop/Edwards/J.Thomas should be adequate depth/talent at the safety position.
 
Morgan Burnett is gone but he really needs another year. I think he is going to be very disapointed with his draft position [very late round selection if that].

Agree, but he will be drafted though. Perfect size, speed, and he's a playmaker.

Needs one more year to be a 1st-2nd rounder for sure, could be a lottery pick.
 
The upcoming year in the NFL will be a very interesting one and not on the field. I may not have all of the pertinent details correct but I think the NFL and the PU haven't reach a new deal for 2011 and beyond. It is quite possible there will be a lockout in 2011 but even if not there may well be a rookie salary cap imposed. I suppose you'll see many juniors coming out this year. I probably would if I thought I could make at least the 3rd round. If there is in fact a lock out they could use their rookie money to finish their education.

Lottery pick? There are no lottery picks in the NFL draft.

No idea and it's way easy for us to speculate (or hope he stays in school)... but I believe I read a recent article that said 40% of former NFL players are broke with 5 years of retiring and something like over half of NBA players are in the same boat.

When you do the math that a NFL career averages about 4 years.... getting that college degree is more and more important.

From what I have read, MB is the #2 rated safety in the country behind Eric Berry. I'm not sure why folks feel he should stay, if the pundits are true. If you compare the two (MB & EB), the numbers are VERY similar, with MB being slightly ahead in some areas.

Berry - 5' 11"...203 lbs
Burnett - 6' 1"...210 lbs

2008
EB - 72 tackles; 8.5 Tkl for loss; 7 Int.
MB - 93 tackles; 7 Tlk for loss; 7 Int.

2009
EB - 87 tackles; 7 Tkl for loss; ? Ints
MB - 85 tackles; 4 Tks for loss; 4 Ints

BTW, in high school, MB (North Clayton) was faster than EB (Creekside) in track.

I doubt seriously he will drop nearly as far some think.

Going pro doesn't mean he can't get a college degree later. His decision to go pro doesn't prevent him from getting his degree. The 2 are not related.
 
Last year, Morgan had a good year as a Safety. This year, Morgan had a good year as a 4th linebacker because he really looked more concerned about what was happening in the backfield instead of reading the QB and playing the pass. This was one of the things that I didn't like about Wommack's defense.

While Morgan's stats as a safety doesn't make him look like an impressive safety this past season, I think scouts know of his athletic ability. Can't wait to see this guy on Sundays.

What is your source for #2 rated safety in the country? I can't find any draft ranking that has him on the board.

OK, so that was #2 junior and not #2 overall. And I am not sure that wasn't preseason and he didn't drop this season.

He isn't in the top 32 overall prospects and three other safeties are.

Sorry if my earlier statement wasn't accurate. The AJC article was one source, but it wasn't the the first (or only) time I heard that. What is the link of the top 32 overall prospects? Does it include underclassmen?

I still believe that if Berry is the concensus #1 rated safety in the draft, MB can't be far behind. I believe both of these guys are considered free safeties, so I'm not surprised if a strong safety (like the massive kid, Taylor Mays, from USC) is showing up on mock drafts in front of MB.

I think MB's 2008 season makes us think look down on his '09 season. Check the stats! They were quite comparable to the kid projected as being a definite top 5 pick!
