In order of critical importance:

1. Two blocks in the back - both of which called back potential touchdowns. If that doesn't happen, we score 35.

2. UVA's DL knew our snap count and got the jump on the whole play with stupid regularity. We burned them for it just once in the 3rd quarter on 4th and 10 before we converted with an a-back pass to Orwin. We need to find a way to fix this desperately, because MD did it too, in addition to reading our pull blocking (i'm not sure if UVA tried to replicate this or had any success). You can rest assured that this is part of the blueprint everyone else will copy for the rest of the season.

3. UVA's safeties got into OUR backfield. Multiple pitches disrupted, multiple tackles made behind the LOS. BY SAFETIES. We could not for the life of us hit the pass plays to exploit this, and when we did, see #1. This is the second part of the blueprint everyone else will copy for the rest of the season.

4. We punted when we shouldn't have. We were 3-3 on fourth down conversions and desperately needed to score to win the game. We should have drawn them offsides (we probably could have done this at will) and at least tried to convert the resulting 4th downs. There was absolutely no hope of us winning that game without a score. To boot (no pun intended), our kicking game was MISERABLE.

And for those of you hating on the defense:

Our defense only gave up 24 points and scored 7 of their own. Dispite giving up gaudy numbers, they put us in the position to need only 3 touchdowns from our offense to win the game. And as for those numbers, UVA averaged 438 ypg in other games (and 27 points), so it's not as though they had a season high outing against us. It was just another day for their offense at the very best, we just got our asses handed to us trying to respond.

Say what you want about who you want, but all this sh*t happened. It's a fact. If you don't want to look at it, continue being a moron. The issues we saw on offense are not schematic, they are due to boneheaded lack of execution. We have counters for everything UVA did on defense built into our offensive system, we just failed to execute ALL of them. The issues we saw on defense were the same issues that always give us trouble: being blown off the line by a big physical OL and a good power running game.

What's the solution? Hell if I know. But that's the freaking problem.

The solution is for the o line to play better, the QB to throw better, and the receivers to catch better.

And demoralize the other team by scoring rather than punting and continuing to put our defense back on the field, typically with a short field to work with thanks to our not so special teams.

lots of teams win by scoring 24 points........stop bailing out our defense.........we didn't deserve to win this.

go ahead and tell me how we had a pic 6 and I still won't care......awful :)

Quit saying we ONLY gave up 24. First of all UVA had waltzed down to our 10 yard line at the end of the game and took a knee. They would have scored 31 with one more legit play.

The defense sucks.

The offense has sucked the past three weeks and the opposing defenses are just going to get tougher.

Stop making f'ing excuses for this team. We should expect better. We should expect to have a starting quarterback that can at least scare a defense throwing the ball four years into this. We should have an offensive line four years in that can dominate with this scheme. And our head coach should take more responsibility about the loss and about what our limitations are at this point. I wasn't happy at all with his comments after the game.

If we didn't only give up 24, how many did we give up? It says 24 on my screen.

We shouldn't have to hold every opponent below 20 to win. Two years ago and last year as well we were all craving a mediocre defense that would do just what it is doing right now, stop us from having to win shootouts. We got it. Take some midol and stop bitching about it.

The offense failed (on every level), and nobody is making any excuses for it. Identifying a failure is not making an excuse. Unless what you're telling me is that you think the spread option offense in a theoretical sense is what's broken. In which case you're retarded.

the only argument people have for defending the defense is that the offense also sucked. WE KNOW. We aren't defending the Offense either...BOth played shitty.....

and I love the people who think the spread option can't be cracked.....teams wouldn't have stopped running it in the 70's 80's if it was uncrackable.....NFL Teams would run it...It's cracked by bigger, stronger, faster defenders who play assignment football....IT's helped by offenses that can't complete a pass....

I can agree with this, I don't think the defense had a stellar performance either, but they did not fail and lose us the game. Complaining about the defense at this point is dumb because as mediocre as it is, it was the best unit on the field yesterday.

to me--its like Scott Blair vs. Georgia....did his missed extra point lose us the game?? probably not.........did it severely hinder our chances?? probably.

Not hating a defensive player at all but we cant give a team like Va over 400 yds in total offense and expect to win a game.Va aint VT or Ga or Clemson etc and yes those teams gave up yds and points too on Saturday but 276 yds rushing is a hell of a lot of yds to give up to a non rushing team. The elephant in the room is our rush defense and pass rush and until we fix it we will not have the ball back to makethose thrilling last minute offensive marches that lead to victory.

Folks think if you criticize the defense you hate them and thats not true, those guys bust it everyday to get better but its clear we are not progressing with the thirty four.Solution are many from fans. Some say fire Al and I dont agree,or change back into a forty four which again may not be the key to stopping folks, some say we are not recruiting like we should and the announcers say we need thirty more pounds on our DLs.I think we just are not using the right technique to shed the blockers and we never adjusted to the power sweep.Other teams will take notice of this so now maybe the time to just quit this read and react and go after folks.Hell, like you if I knew the answer I would be a rich man.

So many logical fallacies in here. The spread option offense is just a bunch of plays that independently work just fine. Every play in our playbook is in a playbook in the NFL somewhere, even the triple option.

If you can't complete a pass, you'll have a hard time winning a game of football, and that's true for any team running any system. The scheme is not the problem.

So point us to the fire Paul Johnson thread, or the Triple Option sucks thread. Lots of people seem to want to hang this loss on Defense. All I'm arguing is that the defense was mediocre and the offense was even worse than mediocre, hence we lost to a mediocre UVA team.

Honestly, I didn't expect much more out of the defense this year; but I expected much better from the offense in this game.

IF the defense was the best unit we had on the field then we deserved to lose yesterday. If VA had made one more drive in first half we would have been down 21 to 0 at end of first quarter.

I agree though losing is always a team thing and both sides of the ball played major role in our butt whipping yesterday.Of course you cant tell with the kids,Fla and Auburn looked like a defensive struggle all night long too.Just need to get better.

Offfense had to score more than 17 points and couldn't. They were not playing like a high powered offense. Not even a mediocre offense.

we have a lot of cry babies here. wah wah wah

see y'all in Charlotte

:) Im not crying......Im a man.......It is what it is in my eyes.......

however, I did cry when VSU lost to Arkansas Monticello a few weeks ago

Oh...it says 24 on your screen. Well I hope our defense was high fiving each other after UVA took the knee at the end of the game. That should have been a moral victory we held them at the ten yard line. Give me a freaking break.

And you haven't seen me making excuses for the offense. They were equally pathetic.

lol--I just reviewed your other 464 posts..that was the best one yet.

My two cents:
Point #1 of yours is incorrect. We had a penalty that negated Tevin's run but we scored on that drive anyways.

Paul Johnson not Only got out coached he didn't have this team prepared and the fact of the matter is you could see this coming for 3 weeks now. We showed signs of lackluster play and low motivation since NCST and its gotten progressively worse. That's the coaches job. PJ has said in the past that he shouldn't have to motivate his players. Maybe not. But when your QB goes from prolific to awful in a matter of 3 games and your calling motivational sucking pass plays on 3rd and 3-4 yards or first down plays when your QB is throwing like Betty White, something is wrong and you're not doing enough to fix it.

Our Defense is not really a problem as a whole. Its definitely a handful of players who suck. Our DLine couldn't get by my 3 year old if she taking a nap on the ground. Furthermore there is a certain player that is so Overrated and out of position not to mention terrible at run support that he really doesn't need to be starting. I cannot figure out for the life of me why the coaches haven't let Jemea take over for him.

A certain Senior LB who likes to Trippy Mane too ööööing much and can't play at a high level.

Bottom line for me though is we had less than 300 yards of offense mainly by our own doing and only scored 14 points on O. The 2nd straight week of pure shit. You can say whatever you want to about bad penalties and bad defense making it seem worse, but we have a major problem on offense and its a combination of poor attitude, lack of desire or urgency, and a complete lack of FOCUS.

PJ needs to step up and own it. The poor play is a direct attribute of poor coaching. PERIOD.
