Kudos to Roof

Golden had a great read on that play

That was my perception as well. He started moving before the ball was thrown but admittedly I was in the upper west. It was right below me though.

I had my doubts about Roof stopping the spread today but he coached really well. Some of these defensive starters have been through 3 DCs and none of them teach to read the play like Roof. Linebackers and DBs are in places to make good defensive plays this year and it takes a big load off the DL.

The Watson injury really helped us here. We didn't respect Stoudt running it.

First one was a terrible play call (run the QB to one sideline and then throw all the way back to the other) and execution (threw it right to Golden). It was an amazing play to watch but it wasn't anything special on Golden's part. He was just in the right place.

The DJ White interception was a much better athletic play but the ball was under thrown there as well.

You need to watch the replay...

Golden wasn't standing around flat footed and got hit in the hands by the ball. He was at least 20yds deep when he read the screen. He flew through the Clemson blockers and intended receiver for the interception.

You might want to review that play again. Golden charged from a couple of yards in the end zone nap made the pick at the 15. One hell of a read!

OK, I'll rewatch. Regardless of how great a play Golden made, I still think the play call was sheer stupidity. Even worse than the 'throw across your body' to the middle of the field play.

Well, yeah, it was a stupid play call, but that doesn't change the fact that Golden was deep in the secondary, and anticipated the pass, ran through the line, and put himself exactly where the ball was going.

Mike Patrick (I think) called Golden's play one of the best defensive plays he's ever seen.

It was a dumb play that most of the time is either incomplete or not a lot of yards. Best Clemson could get out of that was a FG, but Golden made a great play to make it 6 for us.

In the post game pressed, Golden gave credit to the coaches and film for recognizing what play was happening.

Credit and respect to Roof and the staff as a whole. I wasn't on board with his hire and I had assumed earlier this season that we were just doomed to another year of no defense and no improvement. I'm over the moon that I have no idea what I'm talking about, it feels really good having the good guys play good defense again.

You're wrong. The announcers said the same thing, and then after they got the wide angle the said that Golden made a great play on the ball. He sprinted from almost the goal line, right through the play. It was great recognition and great ball skills. Don't sell it short by saying the ball was thrown right to him - he made a great read and got to the ball from a decent distance.

OK. Ball still should not have been thrown there. It was a longer throw than a fade to the corner of the EZ would have been.

It was a gift.

Correct....It would have been disappointing if the defense hadn't made a play on that play. Nobody should get away with throwing a floater back against the flow of the play. Good job by the D to take advantage of a bad throw by the QB.
