Just out of curiousity, I would like to see what our list looks like. I'd wager 30-40% that size, but really have no idea.
 
trophies are supposed to be non-monetary awards for amateur success. They're supposed to be "priceless." Selling them as property is a way around this and is essentially paying someone for achievements earned as an amateur.

That's my understanding of the reasoning.

Ugag winning the Fulmer Cup is priceless.
 
FWIW, Odell Thurman's "unspecified violation" was beating the öööö out of his pregnant girlfriend.

3 game suspension conveniently ending right before LSU.
 
I think the text books provided to athletes as part of their scholarship become their personal property, but they are not allowed to sell them. Bowl rings should be treated the same, at least until their eligibility expires. That said, lots of athletes get people to sell the books for them.
