Can we just pretend we're still in the orange bowl?

Going to the Orange Bowl Saturday

We ain't dead yet!

Carquest was a fun bowl, we stayed at embassy suites in lauderdale and we went to south beach late the first night....GOL made us pay the next day, he knew and had us puking....gator wasnt as fun of venue but it was a much better bowl and it was fun beating notre dame

At one time going to a bowl also allowed teams to gain practice time versus teams who did not go to bowls. Coaches thought that was a real plus with giving younger players more practice reps for next year. If so seems that even a lesser bowl would be of benefit. Is that no longer true?

I listen to a sports talk show in Nashville almost daily as I commute to work. An occasional guest is a very long time follower of UT FB and, I believe, has some ties to their program. Many times over the years I have heard him say that he has analyzed the correlation between "going to a bowl' and "next season's performance". Point of the study was to determine if, indeed, the extra practices had any impact on how the team performed the following season. I don't recall if he gave the r or r-squared coefficient specifically (probably wouldn't on a sports talk show), but in his study there is little or no correlation between these two variables. Sample size was significant as he analyzed data from 25-30 years of bowl appearances.

so, based on at least one study, the extra practices theory is a bit meaningless (as a predictor of future success). Of course, there are many other variables that come in to play.

I am going to be bold here and make this prediction. We will NOT go to a bowl game this year BUT next year's record will be better. So, therefore, we can conclude that not going to bowl games is a better predictor for overall team improvement (if my prediction holds true).

I could not be more different than from those who think this streak did not matter. We get 12 chances a year to enjoy winning a football game. Winning 6 is a whole lot better than winning 3 or 4. Looking forward to one more game in a bowl does matter. Sure, I would rather win 10 than 6, but I'll take a winning season to a losing every time. This season has been awful, and it's the first truly awful season we have experienced in nearly 20 years.

Yeah, if you totally weight success on a record of wins and losses. This feels like the Al Groh years to me. I think we made it to some kind of bowl game but we sucked. The era of suckitude must pass! We have truly become mediocre. Sad really.

Thank goodness. That's a relief to know.

To not make it to a bowl game in this era when you start a season knowing you have 2 wins in the bag and only have to win 4 of the remaining 9 is really, really, really bad.

Speaking of bowls - the weather at the old Peach Bowl was always awful. I sat through the drubbing by OL Miss in a down pour at the end of Carsons regime. The players voted not to go, but the school made them. You could tell they didn't give a sh@t!

Remember when we could win every game in conference except against a top 10 FSU team?
Good times.

When Tech came out strong at the Orange Bowl I couldn't believe it. Being a Tech fan I was expecting another LSU or Iowa bowl beat down. I guess CPJ sold this season to the devil for that Orange Bowl domination.

1997 Carquest - Did not attend...but remember that being the coming out party for one Joe Hamilton

1998 Gator - drove through NYE without a hotel room or tix to Jax. Was one of the "purest" bowl experiences as I was a broke kid. Slept in my old GMC Jimmy in the Alltel Stadium parking lot. Made it in to watch us best Notre Dame.

1999 Gator - good trip, lots of scared people stated away due to Y2K scare. Game sucked. This was the start of something big for the Miami program that carried them all the way into 2005 when we beat them at their place.

2000 Peach - was there. That's all I have to say about that.

2001 Seattle - Did not go but was a really good win to go out on. Ole Mac McWhorter the dawg made his way into our record books over a 9-2 Stanford team.

2002 Silicon Valley - Didn't even watch this on TV. Was in Athens for 51-7 earlier and I was cut really, really deep.

2003 Humanitarian - didn't go - but loved watching PJ Daniels rip it up in the snow. Solid outing.

2004 Champs - fun day in Orlando. That was a very drunk crowd. We delivered the KO for Paul Pasqualoni at Cuse.

2005 Emerald - Did not go. Lost to Utah in a baseball stadium. Tenuta defense utter collapse.

2006 Gator - was a good trip following the ACCCG which I could not attend. I was really drunk and kept WVU fans in RVs up with my yelling about their crap program at 1 am. Then we lost a game we didn't trail much in. Karma never fails for me.

2007 Humanitarian - Did not go. Tenuta fail as HC. Let's not play Fresno State ever again ok?

2008 Peach - was cold but spent all day with my 9 year old being a tourist in our own hometown. She'll always remember the paper airplanes. But we sucked. Burn those blue jersies.

2009 Orange - best tailgate ever in Miami. Game could have been better.

2010 Independence - enjoyed staying up all night playing blackjack in a smoky casino. Game left something to be desired. My first losing record season as a GT fan.

2011 Sun - drive to El Paso is very, very long. Drive back to Atlanta....even longer.

2012 Sun - not there, but will always remember this Game as the one the Taliban celebrated with me. Very eventful NYE night. Probably the most unexpected bowl win ever.

2013 Music City - Nashville is a drinking town. I remember very little. Wanted Ole Miss fans to be more obnoxious. Thankfully they were not.

2014 Orange - Did not go in an attempt to save faltering marriage. Big mistake. Regret.

Good times.

GT has only gone 7-1 (or better) in conference play twice since FSU has joined the conference. 1998 and 2009.
