If Kelly fails to bring ND back to BCS bowls I am not sure they will ever get back.

The landscape of college football has changed dramatically since 1988 and ND has a hard time distinguishing itself from other schools.

Kelly will be the 4th "top" coach to try to rebuild the program.

I'm really suprised they haven't yet with that gravy schedule they have every year... Michigan is not the team it used to be.. Navy is the only exception to this schedule lol....

Notre Dame will fall hard. Kelly won't have nearly the amount of success that he had at Cincinnati. 4-8 his first year, 5-7 his second, and Lou Holtz finally stops picking ND altogether.

No, that's wishful thinking. All the "elite" programs have down periods. Some longer than others. I seem to remember not too long ago people were seriously questioning whether Alabama would ever be back. USC, Oklahoma, and Texas had similar periods of mediocrity throughout the 90's.

It will take decades and decades of futility before ND falls off the map. They are like the NY Yankees of college football. The very fact that there's a topic like this on a GT message board tells you how relevant they still are.

Lou Holtz, statistically speaking, will be dead by then.

Notre Dame will never be what it used to be again. Who the hell wants to freeze their ass off with ugly chicks in Indiana during college?

A retarded pygmy could win at ND with their advantages and cupcake schedule. Weiss was an idiot. Kelley is a better HC than a retarded pygmy, so ND should do well with him around.

It'll be funny if Kelly never wins a BCS bowl at ND and Cinci wins theirs this year.

With the schedule they have, and the success Kelly has had where ever he has been, i would say 8-4 to 9-3 his first year, and probably better the second year. They don't, play, anyone but USC who is down now.

Cincy is the one that will be irrelevant. ND, with the right coach will be back. ND has always had a problem when they 1-went with a pro coach 2-an assistant 3-high school coach. They have always won with an experienced head college coach. ND will be in a BCS in a couple of years.

I agree ND is pretty much done anyway! They will never be the same!

I don't see why people say ND will never be on top consistently again. USC did it for a good stretch of time(how many straight pac 10 titles/BCS bowls) and ND pulls in the same amount of talent and plays a much easier schedule. They just need to get the right coaching staff in place.

What some of you old-timers and most sportswriters don't understand, is that this younger generation doesn't care about ND. We weren't around during the 50's or 60's when ND was the only game on...we didn't grow up hoping to play for the Irish. Notre Dame is just a school with good tradition in the middle of Indiana....It isn't "just a matter of time" before they get back on top...they may never get there again.

As far as recruiting goes, they get guys who are bumped to 4 and 5 stars once they commit to ND. They aren't pulling in USCw talent....they aren't even pulling in Michigan State talent on defense. They are SLOW!

ND HAS to DISTINGUISH itself for it to be successful. Ain't nobody going to southbend for the chicks.

If a coach can go in there and win 10+ for a few years they can get back but the clock is ticking.

That premier TV contract is now 2nd tier to SEC and Big 10. The fact that Boise State is on TV every week has a HUGE impact on ND. Kids now would rather start at Boise State then play 2nd string at ND, so that eliminates their recruiting advantage.

They are slow? Wow, they had a pretty prolific offense to be such slowpokes.

What do you know about the talent level they have on defense? The defense was crappy, but I am no convinced that was all (or even mostly) talent.

I agree that for many athletes there is no mystique to playing for ND. But for many there still is that draw, knowing that they will get just a little more attention for the same performance at ND than anywhere else.

You underestimate that factor.

Top talent probably rightly figures it doesn't matter where they go. They can attract the attention to themselves. But others have to know that certain programs will give them more visibility than others.

I will say it again for emphasis. Any athlete will get get just a little more attention for the same performance at ND than ANYWHERE else. Yeah, that is due to the bias of all those "old guy" writers. But the "younger generation" ignores the bias of those "old generation" writers at their own expense. Those old guys will control the PR of how their college career is perceived. A smart "young guy" will recognize that fact.

The very fact there's a topic like this on a GT message board tells you how much the media overhypes Notre Dame football, since most of the posters on here who aren't addressing GT issues are addressing something the sports media scraped up.

This is a great point for anyone who says ND is no longer relevant or more important than other schools. We probably have more threads on Notre Dame than any team besides Tech or U[sic]GA.
