Early intra-ACC Rivalry?

Ultimately, it could be a poll question, but I don't know if it's worth it.

Some have suggested that it would be nice to get an ACC game into our schedule early, and it made me wonder whether trying to get a regular season-opening (week 2) rivalry game going.

Assuming a typically FCS week 1 game, would you be in favor of a week 2 game that was always the same ACC opponent (ie Coastal or Clemson)? If so who?

Considerations:
Clemson - Solid, regularly upper-half team; Rivalry already exists; Challenges team to get into season form early without impacting coastal race
VPI - Recently biggest threat/challenge in Coastal Division; Rivalry Potential: they have "Tech" envy and should be dealt with up-front; sets the coastal race early
UNC - Solid Coastal Division Opponent; Rivalry history is not like Clemson but starts to move in that direction when fans of both football AND basketball are considered; Gets us into Coastal race without being against VPI or Miami

Any others?

Awful idea. It's been established many times that it's best for the good teams to play each other later in the season so both of their rankings get inflated. By playing good teams early you 1) knock one of them into a deep hole and 2) make it so that the winner doesn't get much benefit because they didn't beat a highly ranked team.

Would you go for Duke? Or do you just not like the idea of having a season-opening rivalry?

It'd be hard to consider Duke a rivalry except maybe in basketball.

I'd be all for a Clemson game the second week every year. You'll have all summer to prepare (because who really prepares for a Div1aa school anyway?)

I like playing a team when there's a lot at stake for both sides. To answer your question, I'd rather open with a large non-conf. opponent than risk digging a hole in the conference race early on.

A rivalry in basketball, you could have sure fooled me:laugher:

I would go for Duke, but I wouldn't consider it a rivalry :laugher:.

If I had my way we would always play VT, Clemson, and Miami in the latter half of the season. Basically you want all your meaningful games to be as late as possible so they have more...well...meaning.

Isn't Dook our third most common FB opponent (after the mutts and the tigers to the west)? Obviously, Dook is on its way to overtaking one of those teams, too. Rivalry? No. Series with some serious longevity? Yes.

That being said, I like having them late in the season to provide some relief from the rest of the ACC schedule.

I like the way that the 2011 schedule is shaping up. Having three OOC games to get things going is a lot better than jumping into the ACC schedule right away.

We should play Clemson every year in October; simply because of the pumpkin heads in 2004.

I think we can all rally behind that concept.

not acc, but id like to see us playing notre dame every year as the first game or two. I hate notre dame.
