“One of the best offenses in college football”

First 6 years at USC, winning one East, no SEC Championships
44-33
Chan's first 6 years at GT, winning 1 Coastal, no ACC Championships
44-32

We fired Chan, despite our administration hobbling him early on with Flunkgate.

Yes, I was a FOCcer. Tech fans where whiny little bitches. We are paying for our poor decisions now by allowing UGAg to expand their recruiting advantage over us in this state, not to mention Clemson, Auburn, and Alabama.
Collins has a chance to recruit another Calvin Johnson. He can recruit an NFL quality QB. We were headed towards being a service academy quality school.
Headed toward? We were and had the roster to go with it.

I was excited to have Renfree hitting campus, the first true QB Chan recruited. Shame Threet didn't stick around, but he was in love with Michigan.
QB recruiting and development was Chan’s downfall. He had enough time and Renfree was too late. The fact that we had to trot Taylor Bennett out should tell you that QB recruiting was a massive fail.

He had 6 years, so he needed to get one in year 1 or 2. Reggie came in and did as good as you can expect for not being pro style size and arm strength. Played his ass off.

We had nobody in 2002, really. The UGAg game was just awful that year with Bilbo and Suggs just being overwhelmed.

We also had to face "good Miami" when they joined the ACC. The 2004 game was a testament to Reggie's bravery as we could not block any of Miami's DL or LB's. One LB was practically taking the snap (52 or 55?). Reggie was reduced to trying to run draw plays for what he could get because he had exactly a half second before Miami defenders converged on him. Tough day.

Someone else just posted Duke is 12th in total offense. I thought the quote was dumb at the time (and obviously Collins is known to exaggerate these things), but maybe there's a grain of truth.

A direct halftime quote by our favorite head coach about the Duke Blue Devils.
Coming into the Game Duke was ranked #13 in Total offense out of 130 FBS Programs.

Was the statement over the top ridiculous like everyone around here is claiming, maybe maybe not?

We fired Chan for not beating his rival. It’s very common in college football. Spurrier was 6-4 against Clemson.

Chan had trouble finding a QB at GT during his 6 yrs here , the Program was in very good shape except for 1 isolated position - QB

FSU & Miami have gone almost tbe same amount of time and still haven't found a decent QB (Miami did get King from the Portal), but before King went to Miami, they had gone about a decade without QBs that were up to their Norm.

FSU hasn't had decent QB Play since Jameis and he's on his 7th yr in the NFL.

IMO a School like GT could've been a little more patient with Chan, especially when he had two 4* QBs in line to Play for us, Renfree went on to hold a clipboard in the NFL meaning he would have been a dominant QB for GT, we never found out because a certain GT HC told Renfree's Dad, "don't want him, don't need him, doesn't fit the system" ( BTW what kind of HC and ambassador for GT would ever talk to a Parent of a Recruit like that, just thinking out loud?)

That's the attitude that alienated so many GA HS FB Coaches for 11 long years, yet the Folks around here thought it was because we weren't spending enough Money on recruiting.

I apologize in advance for the trip down memory lane.

Yeah, because they’ve played a bunch of sorry football teams. Charlotte, NC A&T, and Kansas. They won’t finish in the top 30 for offense when all the games are played but it’s a good sound bite today. Just like saying we lost to a top 5 team by 6 (we won’t talk about the elephant sitting in the corner).

Tell me again how many other coaches took SC to a championship game? SC and Clemson are both 2 teams who historically underperformed. I'm no Spurrier fan but what he did at SC was impressive. Honestly if he had gone there a few years before Dabo gave Clemson new life then Spurrier could have have competed for a natty.

Prior to our game Dook rated #106 Offense by Football Outsiders. Hardly ELITE. Defending an insane comment is insane.

Spurrier didn't take over the dregs. Holtz layed some pretty good groundwork down, otherwise, Spurrier never agrees to coach there.
And compete for a Natty is a stretch. Clemson was hardly a world beater under Dabo until the last 6-7 years.

Spurrier was pretty mediocre everywhere but Florida.
That’s just not true. He did far better at Duke than most. The job he did there got him the UF job. He was elite at UF. He took over at South Carolina and made them a legit threat in the SEC. He was consistently spanking Clemson while there. College Football Hall of Famer, as a coach, for a reason.

Did anyone notice the "Spurrier" on the Duke sideline? I think he was wearing a red hat. I wondered if he was related to Spurrier.

And anyone who asserts that Spurrier didn't accomplish anything outside of Florida is just tattooing "Dumbass" on their forehead.

Wasn’t just a QB problem under Chan. The whole offense sucked despite some individual bright spots with talent. We were only good on D. Thank you coach Tenuta. Tech is very rarely good on both offense and defense in any single year. It’s true under Collins also. The OC is fairly despised but is outperforming the staff that runs the D.

"Legit threat" was one first place SEC east finish the entire time he was there.
Add in his first 6 years he was almost identical in record to Chan

Chan wasn’t coaching in the SEC. Spurrier wasn’t playing against Wake in the conference championship.
