This is the wrong time of year to be talking about how CPJ compares to prior GT coaches... we got games to prepare for... mind rite etc. Nevertheless bc many on the board love this topic, here's my contribution...

We've played 51 seasons of football since Dodd retired (1967-2017) and had 9 coaches during that time.

The number of games the team plays has varied over the years, and now we typically play 50% more games each year than 100 years ago. So it seems fair to me not to look for 8+ win seasons or 9+ win seasons or 10+ win seasons, but rather to go by winning percentages.

Here are the ten best seasons (by winning percentage) since Dodd...

1990 Ross – 11-0-1 (0.958)
1998 O'Leary – 10-2-0 (0.833)
1985 Curry – 9-2-1 (0.792)
2014 CPJ – 11-3-0 (0.786)
2009 CPJ – 11-3-0 (0.786)
1970 Carson – 9-3-0 (0.750)
2000 O'Leary – 9-3-0 (0.750)
2008 CPJ – 9-4-0 (0.692)
2016 CPJ – 9-4-0 (0.692)
1999 O'Leary – 8-4-0 (0.667)

CCG's best season (2006 – 9-5-0 (.643)) comes in at #11 on the list.

So CCG's best season would be CPJ's fifth-best season. And while CPJ has coached 20% of our post-Dodd years, he's responsible for 40% of our best post-Dodd years.

We all agree that if we continue the downward trend of 2015-2017, then he's on the hot seat. But IMHO he's definitely earned the benefit of the doubt for now.

(As an aside, here's the average games played per season, per decade...
1910's – 8.6 games/yr
1920's – 9.2/yr
1930's – 10.0/yr
1940's – 10.4/yr
1950's – 11.1/yr
1960's – 10.4/yr
1970's – 11.4/yr
1980's – 11.1/yr
1990's – 11.6/yr
2000's – 12.8/yr
2010's – 12.9/yr)

CPJ's years have also been more delicious because we get extra cupcakes.
We also get a powerhouse Clemson as opposed to the Clemson of the 90s and 2000s that was pretty much on par with us.

It's not like we've just used the extra game to add cupcakes. We've played plenty of pretty strong OOC opponents with that extra game.

So 3 of the last 4 coaches had better seasons than cpj

But you’ve got to take the bad with the good. Ross had a 2-9 season and Curry a 1-10 and 1-9-1, not to mention 0-1-1 against Furman

I'm not a hater guys just making trolling observations... I agree he deserves at least a year or two still

Hell my dog is named PJ

Three of our top 10 seasons are ones with 4 losses? That’s pretty sad.
Yup, only 7 seasons of 3 losses or less in the past 51 seasons.

Not that we need any perspective, but to put that in perspective, over the same time period...
UNC had 12 seasons of 3 losses or less,
VT had 17 seasons of 3 losses or less,
Clemson had 19 seasons of 3 losses or less,
UGA had 26 seasons of 3 losses or less,
Texas had 26 seasons of 3 losses or less, and
Alabama had 35 seasons of 3 losses or less.

Sigh.

That's right, CPJ has yet to achieve the heights of the All-America Bowl.

but he has achieved the lows of 2015, missed bowls (in the age where 80 teams get invite), and an embarrassing home blowout loss to MTSU.

Boo Hoo! Our opponents got good. That's what we have been talking about for the last five years. The conference has gotten better--something we said we wanted. The division got better. Tech stayed relatively the same. Jettison our Tommy Bowden and hire a Dabo.

Dabo would be complete shit at Tech.
