10 best post-Dodd seasons

Boo Hoo! Our opponents got good. That's what we have been talking about for the last five years. The conference has gotten better--something we said we wanted. The division got better. Tech stayed relatively the same. Jettison our Tommy Bowden and hire a Dabo.

relatively the same? We've had 2 losing seasons the past 3 years. That's stepping backward IMO. Hopefully the Woody hire halts that.

but he has achieved the lows of 2015, missed bowls (in the age where 80 teams get invite), and an embarrassing home blowout loss to MTSU.
William Alexander’s worst season 1-9-0
Bobby dodds 5-6-0
BudCarson 4-6-0
Pepper Rodgers 4-6-0
Bill curry 1-9-0
Bobby Ross 2-9-0 or 3-8-0

I think Rodgers was 4-6-1 in 1976. The tie was Clemson I believe. We thought that sucked at the time! One of those 4 wins was Notre Dame.

Dabo would be complete öööö at Tech.
I didn't say hire Dabo, I said hire "a Dabo" meaning hire a ööööing coach that can recruit, build a staff, improve the program and energize the fan base. Jeez-a-loo.

I can't really figure why some people are still so particularly butthurt about the MTSU loss. I mean, it sucks, but it never crosses my mind. There are probably 10 other losses under CPJ that bother me more than that MTSU loss.

Agreed - just pointing out that CPJ has had his "Furman" loss too.

Noted.

Tech just needs to hire the best coach in modern program history.

The hottest of takes right there.

If you are saying we don't have the Athletic Association or AD that can compete with the DOZENS of programs that hire exemplary coaches year in and year out then let's punt. I'd just as soon quit playing football altogether than go 3-9 and call it good.

What have the past 50 years taught you?

We should do that. I wonder why we haven’t since 1990?

This is the wrong time of year to be talking about how CPJ compares to prior GT coaches... we got games to prepare for... mind rite etc. Nevertheless bc many on the board love this topic, here's my contribution...

We've played 51 seasons of football since Dodd retired (1967-2017) and had 9 coaches during that time.

The number of games the team plays has varied over the years, and now we typically play 50% more games each year than 100 years ago. So it seems fair to me not to look for 8+ win seasons or 9+ win seasons or 10+ win seasons, but rather to go by winning percentages.

Here are the ten best seasons (by winning percentage) since Dodd...

1990 Ross – 11-0-1 (0.958)
1998 O'Leary – 10-2-0 (0.833)
1985 Curry – 9-2-1 (0.792)
2014 CPJ – 11-3-0 (0.786)
2009 CPJ – 11-3-0 (0.786)
1970 Carson – 9-3-0 (0.750)
2000 O'Leary – 9-3-0 (0.750)
2008 CPJ – 9-4-0 (0.692)
2016 CPJ – 9-4-0 (0.692)
1999 O'Leary – 8-4-0 (0.667)

CCG's best season (2006 – 9-5-0 (.643)) comes in at #11 on the list.

So CCG's best season would be CPJ's fifth-best season. And while CPJ has coached 20% of our post-Dodd years, he's responsible for 40% of our best post-Dodd years.

We all agree that if we continue the downward trend of 2015-2017, then he's on the hot seat. But IMHO he's definitely earned the benefit of the doubt for now.

(As an aside, here's the average games played per season, per decade...
1910's – 8.6 games/yr
1920's – 9.2/yr
1930's – 10.0/yr
1940's – 10.4/yr
1950's – 11.1/yr
1960's – 10.4/yr
1970's – 11.4/yr
1980's – 11.1/yr
1990's – 11.6/yr
2000's – 12.8/yr
2010's – 12.9/yr)

Better way to look at is by rating
1. 1990 ap2 coaches1 -ross
2. 2014 8-7 -cpj
3 1998 9-11 oleary
4. 2009 13-13 cpj
5. 1970 13-17 carson
6. 2000 17-19 oleary
7. 1985 19-18 curry
8. 1999 20-21 oleary
9. 2008 22-22 cpj
10. 1997 25-notin oleary

2016 team should have made top25 but so be it. Oleary was a good coach - maybe better than CPJ. But give CPJ credit, he has 3 teams on list and probably should have 4.

2 issues:

1) I strongly disagree that DOZENS of programs hire exemplary coaches. There aren't a ton out there, and recently you've got programs with much better resources that ours going into the shitter with bad hires (Texas, FSU, Michigan, Florida, Tennessee, etc.)

2) I think CPJ is vastly better than most hires we see. Basically every other coach that was even mentioned back in 2007 for the GT job turned out to be dog shit wherever they went, except Johnson. What does that tell you about our odds?

A remarkably similar list

I'm reminded of a famous George O'Leary quote about Tech expectations (paraphrasing): "They expect to be MIT during the week and FSU on Saturdays."
