I remember that. I was at Hudson Grille (I believe) that night. We all went bonkers. I truly believe CPJ disliked them as much as Spurrier. Let me edit this to say, that was back when we had a coach that had the gonads to face an audience.
I'll refer to what @ChattanoogaJacket posted a little later.
But some years ago, I'm at an event. PJ's there, Richt's there, so is a big media scrum.
There's about two dozen to 30 reporters from all over the state all over Richt.
It's just me and PJ at that point.
He looks at me and goes, "You don't think there's a media bias in this state?" (with an adjective or two left out in front of the word media)
Me: "Never said there wasn't, man."
Though I think PJ and Richt actually got along OK. There were at least cordial to each other. And PJ did say after the last game at Da U, when it rained and the field was a disaster, that Richt apologized to him before the game for the field conditions.
Erk is still much beloved among older mutts. But the way the school, and especially the president then, treated him and just out and out lied, I don't think that sat too well with Erk. At all.
In 88, when Dooley was set to retire, and all the Mutts wanted Erk to come home, they interviewed him but he turned down the job. Later that afternoon, the UGA president said they never offered him the job.
Erk was none too pleased when he found out that's what was said.
My source on this?
Me.
I'm the guy who had the duty to tell Erk that the Georgia president said they never offered him the job.
