#15 - DT - Alton Tarber - Deerfield Beach (FL)

Hell, DT has been a huge concern for about the past 20 years by my accounting. This class is gonna be awesome!

I have been pining for over a decade to see the reincarnation of Michael Johnson, Darryl Richard, Vance Walker, and Derrick Morgan. Even the next year after three of those went pro, we reloaded with Logan Walls, Ben Anderson, Anthony Egbuniwe, and Jason Peters and won the ACC title.

DT in particular is the most important position in college football and I will not be convinced otherwise.

Even just a decent DL will make the secondary’s job so much easier. Need to get these big guys signed and keep ‘em on the roster for a few years.

That’s not reloading and that DL was terrible. I expect CGC to have significantly better DL than that or he’s not going to make it.

Derrick Morgan was on the 2009 DL, the rest were gone. And he was the only productive guy on that line. 12.5 sacks and 18.5 TFL.
Man, I had forgotten how awesome his production was. We need someone to step up this year.

Ah, so not exactly 20 years, good to know! But you are exactly correct. Saban has built national championship teams around his defensive lines, with a barely serviceable QB, run blocking OL and some bowling ball RBs. Many a head coach live by the creed that the best offense is a good defense.

Saban has put a few QBs in the NFL. More than most SEC schools. I’m sure GT’s staff would gladly accept any QBs good enough to be drafted.

That is old school Saban, before he realized he needed to score 50 points to win games and he overhauled the offense.

I'm talking about the QBs of 10 to 15 years ago. None of them are impact players in the NFL. Serviceable backups maybe.

I would say before he realized he could have a good defense AND score points as well. And yeah he changed his offense philosophy. But his foundation was always defense.

he realized that now, having a good defense means giving up 20, not 10.

Wow, he looks like he just lives in the opponents' backfield. He's going to be a fun player to watch, very disruptive.

I really believe that OL have been given leeway on holds the last 5 years or so to protect QB's. Every team now holds. It is about like saying LaBron James flops or walks. We were holding. Our opponents were holding. They do seem to call outside holds by WR's and TE's down field, but hardly any OL
I think refs are looking the other way on inside holds so Saban realized he couldn't just dominate the LOS with his DL any more and needed to step it up.

And he's basically said as much in interviews. He knows you need an aggressive, dynamic offense to win championships now, no matter how good your defense is.

Fortunately the dwags haven't quite figured this out yet.
