#19 - Ja'Quon Griffin (DT)

He is listed at 265lbs, I don't know if you want to put another 40lbs on him at 6-0 ft. Maybe 10 lbs and use him like a big LB/smallish DE. If he has quickness and a motor that will be more valuable to him than 30-40 extra pounds.
We might not want to put that much weight on him, I don't know. But 3-4 DEs are usually in the 290 range. They are not rush ends, they usually line up nose-to-nose with a Guard and they have to defeat blocks to defend their gap.

Agree with you, these are the type of players Coach Woody uses in his defense! Can't wait to see our defense attacking, instead of getting picked apart little by little.

The kind of players he used at App State are not going to cut it at Georgia Tech. They must be bigger, faster, and stronger.

FWIW, GT and App State had 2 common opponents last year and both of those opponents scored more points on us than they did against App State.

wow, didn't see this response coming... :bfd:

Woody says he wants undersized guys making moves around blocks instead of fighting them off, I guess. Doesn't sound sustainable against our schedule, imo.

He doesn't want big guys that just take up space. I could show you some utterly embarrassing footage of the biggest DLs on our team just like standing there and barely pushing against even Wake Forest's OL. And no, they weren't just holding their gaps. I'd much rather have a little guy who can squirt into the backfield

I get the point u are making but the base alignment of woody 3-4 is the 4tech. They may shade inside called a 4- but Thats head up the tackle. Not the guard. Most base 3-4 are 4 techs. I dont recall ever seeing a 3-4 where the base line is in a 2 0 2 technique which is called a bear front, really since 1985. The bear front is a well known front but not considered a base d and since the dolphins shredded it became situational. Woody will play this though so its a good observation just not our base front. A bear front is almost a 5-2.

With that said. One de will be as you say. 285. What remains to be seen is what he chooses to do with the other. Depending on personnel the 3-4 allows for a weakside de thats 255. In this alignment the olb typically will walk up on the strong side next to a 4- end. If he finds 3 starting bigger dl he likes, branch, glanton, cerge lets say. You will see far more balanced fronts with both olb being dynamic players. This is the scenario you refer too with two big de.

Imo we see one de being the 255 guy just because i think our best three dl are branch, amour, and one other. I think armour doesnt have enough range to play a true olb spot. So he stays in a 3pt.

The olb could be fun to watch though. Does he do a branch adams glanton or cerge line with armour at solb? Or no. I bet that could be one rotation though.

This is the Bill Clinton-Loretta Lynch signing of the dl. The other guys on the line got the attention and he just quietly made plays and kept opponents from being able to gameplan away the higher rated recruits.
Please keep politics off the football board.

I have no idea what you just said, but if you're happy, then I'm happy too.

GT has him listed at 275 rather than 265 for those that care about that sort of thing.

Really you need to go back and look at his stats against some power 5 schools. He cuts it just fine!!!

Also you need to ask Josh Dobbs and Tn about coach Woody's defense. Took them to OT and should have won it.

Georgia had their lowest rushing yards of the season last yr against his def.

Chubb and Michel were a combined 31 carries for 183 yards, 5.9 ypc. And UGA led 31-0 and they sat on the bench, along with the rest of the starters.
