1985 GT VS Mich. St., Winning Drive, Killer Uniforms

I was in that end zone watching the whole thing. Two of my buddies were DL Ken Parker and Glenn Spencer. Glenn now coaches at a Big12 school - not sure what happened to Ken but I know he was on Seattle's practice squad for a bit. He was terrified of Chuck Knox who, I guess, was the coach at the time.

But cheers to @WREKedinTexas for sucn an awesome video.

Didn't we have a bunch of players suspended for this game?
Yes - our starting QB was suspended so a kid named Todd Rampley started the game. If you go back and watch the entire game, you will see Rampley throw an int to a Michigan ST player on our 5 yard line that the MSU guy dropped. If the MSU guy doesn't drop that interception, we lose.

MSU had a running back - I think his name was Lorenzo White who could run thru brick walls and police blockades and the Great Wall of China and the event horizon of most medium sized black holes - dude was an absolute monster. Somehow, we slowed him down enough to stay in the game. This was the genius of Dodd (who was advising Curry during the game). Dodd was a once in a lifetime genius with Xs and 0s - probably better than Bobby Ross or Paul Johnson.

Bottom line is we won. The MSU coach - I think his name was George Pearl was not gracious in defeat. He was a dick and I was so glad we kicked his ass. It was a good feeling when various members of the team were seeking me and their fellow Freeman residents out on their way back to the locker room after the game. We partied well into the night in that beautiful Alabama town.

One day, I will regale you with the tale of our road trip to Auburn in the early 1980s. How I am still a free man allowed to vote and own property and have a security clearance is what's great about America. It starts with my buddy shooting bottle rockets at other cars on I-20 from the back seat of my car at other cars with Auburn stuff on their car. It involves the theft of an actual fire truck from Auburn's campus.

That I am still alive and free to roam the earth is a credit to the gap in the Matrix that allowed Neo to survive.

Yes, I remember it was John Dewberry that was suspended. I don't remember much about the '83 team, but the '84 and '85 squads were really good. We beat Alabama, Clemson and Georgia in '84.

Wasn't Andre Rison on that team too?

We would have beaten the dwags in 1983 but for one under thrown pass late in the 4th quarter. Dewberry underthrew a pass to our guy who had Tony Flak beat - if he catches that pass in stride - game over - Tech wins.

There are about 4 or 5 plays over the last 40 years that I guess I'll never get over. That play is one of them. The holding call against us in 1997 is another. The failed onside kick against F$U in 1992 is another. The completely ööööed up execution of the brilliant call to score a winning TD against Clemson late in the game last year is another. If we execute that simple play, we win.

I was at that game in 1983, sitting in lower west section 103. It happened right in front of me. Very sad play I’ll never forget.

I was at the 1985 All American bowl game, too

I'll go to my grave believing that Don Lindsey was the best DC GT has ever had.

Ted Roof told me that in the Fog game in 1985, our D showed a different defensive alignment for every single offensive snap that the dwags ran.

That is incomprehensible.

We haven't sniffed that kind of defensive sophistication since.

My parents met at MSU, so I grew up an Spartan fan. Perles was...not a great coach. They had enough talent on a few of those teams in the late 80s to win a MNC, but never did better than a Rose Bowl win in, I believe, '89. I'll have to send this clip to my dad, maybe try to find the full game.

Lorenzo White was indeed a monster. Played for the Houston Oilers for a few years. I still have a couple of his football cards, both college and pro.

I was in that end zone as well. Snuck in a bottle of cheap champagne (it was New Years Eve) and popped it open after we scored on that drive.

Wasn't that the Passport Bowl, nicknamed the Piss Poor Bowl? My memory is fading but I believe those of us still interested in GT football at the time were excited at playing Mich St. Then there was the infamous Fowler St green wall- something to the effect of Dewberry was she worth it spray painted on it after we had won. Good times.

Yep, I was in the Upper West for that dwag game in '83. Don't remember the receiver at the moment but he was several yards behind the DB headed South and Dewberry choked the pass and it floated and was intercepted. Game over.

Yes, I was at that game. Pass was intercepted near the end zone if I remember correctly. We slowed/stopped Herschel Walker pretty good all day.

Adidas had some women’s tear away pants that color. My wife (no pics) said that’s the color Tech needs to grab on to.
