1985 GT VS Mich. St., Winning Drive, Killer Uniforms

I was there, the night Ricky Nelson died
Ricky Nelson’s plane crash was unusual in that all the passengers died, but the pilot and co pilot survived. The plane manufacturer blamed Nelson and his fellow passengers with freebasing cocaine as the cause of the crash. The evidence did not prove that as there was a problem with a heater in the passenger compartment that might have been the cause. We will never know for sure.

When did we go from black to deep blue on the jerseys? I have a 1990 Starter Jacket that I bought at that sporting goods store on the east side of 75-85. It is the dark blue. So we must have changed when Bobby Ross came in.

Watching film from this decade, it is amazing how much the speed of the game has increased since then.

Yes - our starting QB was suspended so a kid named Todd Rampley started the game. If you go back and watch the entire game, you will see Rampley throw an int to a Michigan ST player on our 5 yard line that the MSU guy dropped. If the MSU guy doesn't drop that interception, we lose.

MSU had a running back - I think his name was Lorenzo White who could run thru brick walls and police blockades and the Great Wall of China and the event horizon of most medium sized black holes - dude was an absolute monster. Somehow, we slowed him down enough to stay in the game. This was the genius of Dodd (who was advising Curry during the game). Dodd was a once in a lifetime genius with Xs and 0s - probably better than Bobby Ross or Paul Johnson.

Bottom line is we won. The MSU coach - I think his name was George Pearl was not gracious in defeat. He was a dick and I was so glad we kicked his ass. It was a good feeling when various members of the team were seeking me and their fellow Freeman residents out on their way back to the locker room after the game. We partied well into the night in that beautiful Alabama town.

One day, I will regale you with the tale of our road trip to Auburn in the early 1980s. How I am still a free man allowed to vote and own property and have a security clearance is what's great about America. It starts with my buddy shooting bottle rockets at other cars on I-20 from the back seat of my car at other cars with Auburn stuff on their car. It involves the theft of an actual fire truck from Auburn's campus.

That I am still alive and free to roam the earth is a credit to the gap in the Matrix that allowed Neo to survive.

What you wrote is interesting. Not having played, I am always interested in players' insights. Could you elaborate on what you said about Coach Dodd advising Coach Curry during the game, and how he communicated with him?

You are right about Coach Dodd being a football genius. I have a copy of his book, "Bobby Dodd on Football, Football The Georgia Tech Way," published by Prentice Hall in the early 1950s. I have my father in law's copy, which Coach Dodd signed for him.

My father in law went to all Tech games during Dodd's great run from about 1951-1956. I asked him what it was like to be a Tech fan back then. He said, "We didn't go to games to see if Tech would win. We went to see how Tech would win."

To Hell With Georgia!

My dad started going to Tech games when he came back from the Korean War. He said Coach Dodd sat in a directors chair. On one side was the offense and on the other was the defense. He would sit there and call a player over, give him instructions and then send him in the game. Dad thought Bobby Dodd was the greatest football mind and that nobody frustrated Bear Bryant like Dodd did.

I love your post. I got Coach Dodd to autograph Dodd’s Luck which I gave to my father - they both passed away shortly thereafter.

I don’t have first hand knowledge about the help Dodd was offering during the AA Bowl. I do know that Curry and Dodd would have Master/Student class every post game Sunday. I was told Dodd was helping during the game - probably low tech - XO scribbles; half time mtg, etc.

I was also at the AA game.It was an example of what good OLs and DEF could do. We just stayed in the game til we won it. btw--notice the blocking on those plays at end.Its been a while since we seen that --er,3 yrs.

Your dad would be right

Suspended for the game we’re the already mentioned QB John Dewberry and WR Gary Lee and also the other starting WR TOBY PEARSON.
