RM, anyone else that cares to comment,
What happened in 1986? '85 was such a good year. A few bounces/calls it would have been a great year. I used to(and probably still do) think that Curry does well that year and he would continue to coach @ Tech a long time. I know we had QB issues, but we seemed to have a good core. Was our cuboard that bare after '85? I know Ross suffered early on, but coaching changes often take a long time and I know there was a significant personality change

at least from what I remember about that year, there really wasn't any offense or defense.

I'd say '85 was the exception; '86 was more typical of that era. The '86 offense was 1/2 a yard & a cloud of dust. Frustrating to watch. Gailey's offenses looked creative compared to Curry's '86 offense. Much of 85's "Black Watch" defense (including Ted Roof) was gone in '86. The tie with 1AA Furman in the season opener set a bad tone for the season. The main bright spot that season was the upset over Tennessee. Grant Field was crazy that night. I still can't believe Alabama hired Curry after that season; I don't think Curry ever beat Auburn as a coach.

Two words: Rip Scherer

I believe he was Curry's entrusted OC. The amazing part was Curry had fired/demoted him before & kept re-hiring him. He even went to Bammer with Curry & the Bammers really went after him.

Rip Scherer:
1980 Quarterbacks;
1981 Offensive Coordinator;
1982-83 Running Backs;
1984 Assistant Head Coach- Operations;
1986 Assistant Head Coach- Offense

86 was not a fun year for me personally from an individual and team standpoint. We all hated Scherer and new it was going to be a long year. We had players not play too their potential that really hurt us. We had players get hurt or keep themselves out of the game in fear of getting hurt. I personally blame Scherer for the WF and nadlicker loss, two games we clearly were the better team.

I can't tell you how frustrating it was when the defense would call out what we were running and having a QB that wouldn't audible out because scherer wouldn't let him. The biggest mistake I made after the WF game was holding on to Gary Lee when I should have let him whip scherers arse.

So yes 86 was a disappointing year on the field but not with some of my teammates.

I could never make up my mind which was more frustrating: Scherer's legendary incompetence or Curry's inability to see it.

The Mets invented the rally-cap and subsequently won the world series.

I think I came the closest to divorce in my now 25 years of marriage the day of the Wake game. My wife finally threw me out of the house and I listened to the end in my car screaming at the radio. We should have won at least 8 that year IMO.

With JD at center why did we run wide on fourth and 1 to lose the Wake game? A horrible call.

We really missed some good defensive players and Dewberry in '86.

Yeah, and did the same thing the next week against the nad lickers. They were laughing because they knew what play we were going to run, it was a sad day.

This thread forces me to realize that in the year 2030, we will be hollographically, tearfully reminiscing about the 2002 Florida State game.

"Why didn't Chan just play Dumbo?"
"Bilbo."
"Bilbo, that's what I said."

You might be crying, but I'm not a mac user.

And don't forget the great Pat Swilling, who went to the New Orleans Saints for the 1986 season. I believe Swilling is still Tech's all-time leader in sacks. We missed him in '86.
