1986

1986 I was in 8th grade and I remember sitting in the stands calling the next play and getting in right about 75% of the time...My Dad would curse Rip up and down...
Rip had to be the WORST coach in the history of the game...however I didnt realize the players had it in for him as much as RFM indicates....why was Curry so enamored with Rip?

I got into a HEATED argument with Rip Scherer in 1986. I told him that his offense was outdated and quoted stats showing that no successful team in the US in 1986 (except Nebraska, which had a different kind of athlete) was running the old style power offense that he was running. I also told him that DCs must enjoy the week off before they played GT, since the offense was so predictable that they didn't have to prepare.

He told me that I wasn't at practice and that I didn't know what I was talking about. I told him that I spent 30 hours a week watching college football (it was my only hobby in those days) and that he didn't understand what was working in the modern (at that time) college game, and that he needed to spend more time watching other teams play.

The guy is an idiot. Couldn't believe that Memphis hired him as HC, and can't believe he is still making a living coaching football--or at least he was a couple of years ago.

at least from what I remember about that year, there really wasn't any offense or defense.

Your mom must have had the TV up really loud that season for you to hear it so clearly in the womb that you could remember!

damn you are annoying! you have nothing to say, but make two completely idiotic posts in the thread. they should change you from "Dodd-like" to "beyond hope"

I'm still surprised he never got caught for having visits with a little point guard on the lady Jackets BBall team as well.

put me on your ignore list then.

He had to have pictures of curry under a bridge, or something.

He not only got the job the first time, but then got it back.

I totally agree with the evaluation of Scherer. Under Curry, Scherer was not a very good offensive coordinator. Painter was much better.

If I remember correctly, Painter left to be OC at Texas. Did he leave for more $$$$ or something else?

That Wake game in '86 was a killer. I remember it distinctly as I was a senior in high school.

I was shocked when Curry announced that he was leaving for Alabama. Two players in the 2 classes immediately ahead of me (Chuck Owen and Joe Siffri) had gone to GT to play under Curry. No one in my class played Div I-A, although some did play Div I-AA at Furman. Joe Siffri's younger brother Paul (in the class below me) played tight end at Furman on their Div I-AA Championship team.

The fall off from the high of 1985 to the 2-9 record under Ross for my freshman year was a real downer. I hope we do not have to endure that again during this transition to another demanding coach in Paul Johnson.
