Whatever happened to the Total Person Program anyway?

GEORGIA TECH INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS

Intercollegiate athletics at Georgia Tech have enjoyed a long and storied history marked by tradition and success. The athletics program is administered as a nonprofit corporation through a board of trustees chaired by the president of Georgia Tech. The board consists of seven faculty members, three students, and three alumni representatives. The Georgia Tech athletics program is committed to the development, preparation, support, and graduation of its student-athletes through its Total Person Program and Academic Services. The athletic department provides and maintains facilities, offering goods and services for participation of more than 350 student-athletes competing in 17 NCAA Division I sports. Georgia Tech is a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Intercollegiate sports at Georgia Tech include football, men’s and women’s basketball, women’s volleyball, softball, baseball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, and men’s and women’s cross-country, and men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track. The athletic program at Georgia Tech is committed to excellence and competition at the highest national level. Georgia Tech athletics serves as a compliment to the overall mission of the Institute.

The hub of Georgia Tech athletics is the Arthur Edge Athletic Center, which houses administrative and coaching staffs, a dining hall, locker rooms, training and weight facilities, and the Andrew Hearn Academic Center. The Homer Rice Center for Sports Performance is the home of the Total Person program, the best of its kind in the United States. The Center is comprised of seven sports performance and wellness clinics.

Thanks BuzzCzar.

But how come I only hear about it in the past tense? It seems like its not something we actively promote anymore inside or outside the program. I could be completely off base though. Anyone want to educate me?

The Total Person Program
Mission
Dr. Homer Rice, former Georgia Tech Athletics Director, originally conceived the Total Person concept on his believe that excellence is a result of a balanced life that encompasses academic excellence, athletic achievement, and personal well-being. Georgia Tech was involved in the development of the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills program due to the existence of the Total Person concept. Our program provides many opportunities for student-athletes to achieve their potential in all areas of their lives. Such opportunities include:
  • Student-Athlete Advisory Board (SAAB) - This board is comprised of one student-athlete representative from each team to be the leader and spokesperson for that team. The SAAB provides an effective means by which student-athletes can evaluate programs and provide feedback for the services offered. For more information on SAAB, minutes from their monthly meeting, and a complete list of the 2007-2008 SAAB representatives, please visit http://ramblinwreck.cstv.com/school-bio/geot-saab.html.
  • Career Development and Placement - This portion of the Total Person Program helps the student-athlete determine their career interests as well as helping them develop resumes, prepare for job interviews, learn how to market themselves in the work force, and assist with internship opportunities and potential full time employment upon completion of their degree. For a tentative schedule of the Total Person Program career development events, click here.
  • Personal Well-Being - A series of topics related to personal health and well-being are presented to student-athletes throughout the course of the year. Topics each year might include, but are not limited to:
    • Stress/Time management
    • Sexual assault and violence prevention and awareness
    • Drug/Alcohol Use as it relates to health and athletic performance
    • Etiquette Training - business, classroom, dining, etc.
    • Sports Nutrition/Dietary Supplements
For a tentative schedule of the Total Person Program personal development events, click here.
  • Community Outreach - Led by SAAB members, Georgia Tech student-athletes are involved in various community outreach projects each year. Despite their busy academic and athletic schedules, student-athletes realize the importance of being involved in their community by being role models/mentors for aspiring young students/student-athletes, lending a hand in various community events, and representing Georgia Tech Athletics in campus-wide community outreach projects.
Starting this year, teams will be competing in the "Buzz Bowl", a competition between teams for community service involvement. SAAB representatives are responsible for filling out the "Community Outreach Tracking Form" and turning it into Leah Thomas, SAAB Advisor, upon completion of projects. Winners of the "Buzz Bowl" will be recognized at the end of the year student-athlete banquet. For more information on community outreach projects for the 2007-2008 school year, please visit http://ramblinwreck.cstv.com/school-bio/geot-saab.html.
