2 Minute Defense

Doing some checking from last year, we gave up late second or fourth quarter touchdowns to Tennessee, Miami, UVA (Both TD's both 2nd and 4th quarter), Duke, Wake, and VT.

We gave up late 2nd or fourth quarter Field Goals to Miami, Georgia, and Pitt. UNC would have added to that list but missed a 52 yard Field Goal with no time left in the second.

The only two games that we did not give up a score with time running out were Jacksonville State and Clemson. And against Miami and Virginia we gave up points at the end of both halves.

Also, as stated in another thread, we were absolute dead last in Red Zone defense allowing 36 scores in 37 opportunities. Fuentes going for it on 4th and 4 instead of kicking a field goals was our only "Stop".

I am banking a lot of this season on Woody being able to stop at least some 2-minute drives and stopping some red zone opportunities. Thoughts?

Your sexual innuendo is priceless yet very subtle.

"Red Zones" (I thought just one per month?), "scoring", "Woodies", "giving up late" "2 minute drives"

Jesus Lord that’s a horrific stat line.

We really let our opponents score 36/37 times in the Red Zone?

Is that some sort of NCAA record for sucking?

The thing is every single one of us knew it. The other team knew it. Hell, we were in a few games and blew our opportunity, but UGAg just toyed with us all game long

This is basically the name of the game.

If we were merely "national average" at this, instead of pretty much the worst in the country, then we may have won 8 or 9 games last year, with a relatively green team.

This is giving me painful flashbacks to the Tevin era ... :bricks:

Let me rephrase my original question. I am really ready to drink the Woody Kool Aid. Is there anyone out there who is willing to talk me out of it?

I think there is reason for optimism; however, scheming will only take us so far. You know how the saying goes...... Jim’s and Joes., etc.

I’ll be paying attention to third down stops, QB pressures and turnovers.

This interview is where my hope stems from. One question is about installing a system and Coach Woody basically brushes it off and says he's teaching his players to square up and tackle in the open field. He also says systems don't win games, fundamentals win games.

I couldn't believe a Defensive coach at Tech could think such things.

I'm ööööing ready to see some heads get knocked and some blitzing!

I just want some defensive stopped yelling, people scaring their wives and kids, some 2009 Bobby Dodd VT shit on some stops. Make these motheröööööös not want to come back here.

We will play hard and maintain a stiff defense that penetrates the backfield all day long. However, if the game goes longer than 4 hours, we will need to call a doctor.

The question really is: How long will our D be on the field? Seems like our O is designed to give the D a rest, and having an aggressive D plays right into our O strategy. The bend-don't-win strategy is exactly the opposite of what we should be doing as it gives their O time to wear us down by executing on the dink and dunk.

Two long drives in the first half is normally all it takes to win us a game. That usually indicates the opposing team's defense is unprepared or out of position.

Also, some of the highlights from the spring game shows the defense wrapping and tackling. There's one pretty hard tackle for loss that gives me hope Woody will have the D playing like a real defense.

Still going to be weird not seeing the ineffective flying arm tackle.
