2008 Official Season Prediction Thread

I would buy the transition year stuff if we didn't have the athletes we have now. Paul Johnson isn't buying it either, boys he's here to win and WIN NOW!

That said anything less than 8 wins pre bowl and I will be disappointed.

Eight wins would be a spectacular achievement.

I'm not sure how far back you gotta go to find a Tech coach who won 8 or more games his first season but I bet its a ways.

Boy, 8 wins would really be something.

I'm trying not to get too jacked too early but...

I'm sure the number of posts has some indication of a person being an idiot, but in this case not. I have posted for years on The Hive, but not here. Sorry. I have been a Tech fan all my life, and I hope we go 13-0 and win the National Championship, but I thought the question was about my honest opinion for the season. I think we will struggle. I hope not. But it is a new system, and I'm afraid it will take more than one spring and one fall camp to install it to perfection. We have a very tough schedule. Again, I hope we win them all, and I'll admit I was wrong and be glad to do it.

I was just being honest. You don't have to like my answer, but it has nothing to do with the number of posts in this case. I pull for the Jackets with all I've got every Saturday.

I have now finished my second post on StingTalk.

GoldT

Haha. Sorry about that, GoldT. It's just that we often get folks over here from other affiliations throwing out poor predictions just to get a rise out of us.

To be perfectly honest with you, the first time I was asked to predict our record, I sided exactly with you, 5-7. But, when I really sat down and looked at each game individually, I came up with something much better. I didn't mean to give the impression that I didn't respect your opinion, because 5-7 is a very real possibility for us this year, especially with our tough road slate.

I should have recognized your alias from the Hive. In any case, we're glad to have you over here. My apologies once more.

John W. Heisman 1904 8-1-1

William A. "Bill" Alexander 1920 8-1-0

Tying John Heisman in anything would be amazing.

Good homework.

i think we will win 7

IMO, we should win 7

less than 7 would be a disappointment for me, more would be a bonus.

6 would be ok, and understandable, but still disappointing

JaxSt, Duke, GW are gimmies (3)
i think we should beat MsSt and BC (2)
we should be able to split MIA, FSU, UNC & UVA (2)
There is my seven wins
bonus wins potential: Clim, VT, & Ugay

in the last few years, we might have lost 3 of the 4 i say we split, but then get one back from the potential win list.. we will see about this year

Our offense hasn't been winning us anything lately, so the offensive transition is not the main factor here. We don't have tough competition, only VT and UGA are substantially better than us.

I say 9 wins, I believe in PJ and you should believe in PJ! PJ is not going out there to get a 5-7, he is going out there to kick some ass, EVERY SINGLE GAME!

In regards to being disappointed, you shouldn't be disappointed if we do worse, we did lose a lot of starters.

gtfan and gtroy, great and very reasonable game-by-game breakdowns btw. I just don't want to go out and pencil in a loss for any game.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I usually predict the season game-by-game at the beginning of the year, but then rationalize how we're going to win each game at the beginning of the respective week.

I'm a very optimistic fan so yeah it is very hard for me to pencil in a loss, but i really do think we'll have 9 wins this year.

I honestly have no idea!!!!
Any win total between 4 and 9 would not suprise me.
It should be noted that even if we suck on offense, we will still probably bust a few big plays each game just because of the system. Defense plays good and we should go bowling.

GoldT

My apologies GoldT. Usually someone being that negative on their first post is trolling for attention. Look forward from you in the future.

6 wins. If we win six that would be a GREAT year in my opinion. New Coach, drastically new system, no proven QB, and we are YOUNG
(YOUNG= Unpredictable)

JSU , Gard Webb, Duke, UVA Wins

Two swing wins could be ANY game.

We will be too unpredictable to predict every game.

We will beat those teams and suprise two teams.

Don't get frustrated when we struggle fellas, we are in this thing with paul johnson for the long haul.

The prize in the future will be worth any struggle in the beginning.

I say we use the method of giving a 0 - 1 rating on how "winnable" you believe a game is (I think I first saw this from beej67). Add up the ratings for the season, and that's your season win total. Out of all the ways I've seen, this seems to give the most realistic feel for how we might actually perform over the season. I think there are too many unknowns this year to do a stellar prediction, but here's my best shot:

Jacksonville St. - 0.9
Boston College - 0.5
Virginia Tech - 0.3
Missisissippi St. - 0.6
Duke - 0.8
Gardner-Webb - 0.9
Clemson - 0.3
Virginia - 0.6
Florida St. - 0.6
North Carolina - 0.5
Miami - 0.5
Georgia - 0.3

Total: 6.8

Somewhere between 6 and 7 wins. I'd like to be optimistic and expect 7 wins. I don't think we perform worse offensively than in years past, and I think that only helps the defense out.

Ah, the expected value criterion.

Jacksonville St. - 0.9
Boston College - 0.4
Virginia Tech - 0.2
Missisissippi St. - 0.4
Duke - 0.8
Gardner-Webb - 0.9
Clemson - 0.3
Virginia - 0.6
Florida St. - 0.4
North Carolina - 0.5
Miami - 0.5
Georgia - 0.1

Total: 6.0

I hope we can breakeven...

The first half of the season is not too rough.

If we start 6-0 we'll win 9-12 games

If we start 5-1 we'll win 7,8,9, or 10

If we start 4-2 we'll win 7 or 8

If we start 3-3 we'll win 4,5 or 6

If we start 2-4 we'll win 2,3 or 4

We'll be at least 2-4.

We ought to beat Jax and GW. Duke will be better under Cutcliffe, but we ought to win at home. Va Tech will be very tough. At BC and home with MSU are the key games. Win those two and the Paul Johnson train will be rolling at high speed. I think we wil start 4-2 or 5-1, so I predict a good season.

I think 9 wins is a distinct possibility (sorry about the big word) but it could be as few as 5 if the transition really, and I mean REALLY, dogs us. I don't think CPJ will let that happen though. So I'm hedging and saying we should get 7.
