I've read many times on the boards that 2009 was supposed to be a "strong" recruiting year in Georgia, and that we could likely expect this class to be like 2007 if our coaches did a good job getting in state players to sign with us.
However, just glancing over the lists of top players for 2009 on Rivals and Scout, it doesn't appear that there are a ton of "national" type recruits in the state. According to Scout, the top player in state is Abry Jones, a DE from Warner Robbins. He checks in at 53. Are there really zero top 50 national players in the state this year? I find that hard to believe, especially in a year that is supposed to be such a good year for the state. There is one top 50 according to Rivals.
As far as top 100, there are 6 on Scout and 3 on Rivals. Not all that strong when you compare to past years.
I understand that it's early and the rankings will probably change a good bit along the way, but early indications are that this isn't a particularly strong year in state, at least as far as top 50 and top 100 type prospects goes. So where has this sentiment that 2009 should be a good year come from? Are there a lot of academically qualified players compared to other years? Are there more players just outside the top 100 than usual?
