2022 Head Coach Search

We have sit on our ass and let alot of good ones go other places, We could have hired Elko

It pains me to say this...

Tech needs a coach that can stabilize the program. If Tech has to pull from the bargain bin, then a Gregory type coach.

I agree. Just hire the entire staff away from Coastal and we're probably a bowl team.

I hate that we didn't make a play for him and his staff this year. Very little competition for that level of coach right now (AKA a young riser looking for his first job at a low-mid tier P5 school). VT was really the only school shopping for HC in that market. Next year could be different.

That would kill recruiting. Why do you think CPJ retired?
Because the administration hemmed and hawed at financially supporting the most successful coach in a couple decades and his philosophy. It made it a chore to go to work knowing every day he had to prove himself to the people who should have been his biggest supporters. The only support he got was the kind that transfers to a future staff. He never had a contract longer than 4 years after his initial extension.

We seem to be the only people who think there is some binary choice between the two, though. As if just any old option coach is guaranteed to win here, anyway.

Those obviously aren't mutually exclusive, but our current coach is a direct result of believing that the option prevents us from recruiting and if we can just get rid of it we'll be a regular 9+ win team. Maybe I'm making a logical error by biasing towards what recently worked, but this feels like what GS went through.

Same reason anyone retires. Because he coached a long time, 30+ years, made a lot of money, had a lot of success, and wanted to do other things. The timing probably seemed right with players like TaQuon graduating.
T H I S-----s/b mandatory read for all PJ haters. Anybody else on this board retired besides me?

Monken or Niumatalolo. I want the option back. Our new offense sucks and is boring.
First the joke: So you want to either hire the coach who just went 4-8 or hire the coach that just lost that 4-8 team?

Actual response
Odds are no one from Paul Johnson's coaching tree is going to be hired by Georgia Tech, ever. The controversy among the fans and the apparent dislike of it by GT management (and ACC management was my impression) is one thing but I'm not sure is even the biggest problem. The problem is it may not matter what offense either of those actually tries to run were they to be hired here, the narrative of
"Paul Johnson derived coach" = "Old Triple Option Offense" = "Complete Disinterest from NFL Scouts"
will likely dominate in the media and among recruits. It seems very unlikely that hiring anyone from that tree will ever be interpreted as anything but "Second verse, same as the first" and it will be coming back to a team that has (probably) had 4 straight losing seasons instead of a team that is 1 year removed from a conference title game.

Maybe more support for recruiting under Johnson could of changed things. Maybe having a coach to be a better salesman for the system would of changed things. Fact is the support wasn't there and Johnson wasn't able to change the narrative before he retired and that narrative will blanket the program before a game is played or a practice is held or any assistant coaches hired.

We gave up on the triple option, the ship has sailed, the bridge is burned, the horse is dead, just bury it.

Should add, some sort of non-typical offense could still be in the cards and could even be a good idea, but it almost certainly won't come from that particular group of coaches.
