Disturbing.

If Chan Gailey thought sitting on a big lead against a Division 9 team was the right thing to do, he does not understand what this team needs.

Putting up only 24 today is inexcusable. Samford got more out of this 32 point loss than we did.

I hope no one will say it would have been classless to "run up the score." What good was it for Bennet and Manley to get experience unless they were charged with getting their team in the end zone?

At last check, Charlie Weiss still had Quinn and the first string still playing and still scoring in the 4th quarter, leading 41-3.
'Ol Charlie doesn't seem to have a problem embarrassing older Joe Pa, does he? Or,...maybe he believes getting his team comfortable scoring points is more important.

After 5 years, someone still needs to get thru to Chan that this is not the NFL. A "win is a win", is certainly not the same thing in college.

Man...it was 35-6 at half. It shows no class to keep piling that on. It was SMART to get serious PT to the rest of the OL, all backup QB's, and our 3rd string TB's and WR's.

You keep saying 24 pts....if we were up 24-6 at half the first team would have piled on more for you in the 3rd qtr....but points on defense count as well.

sheesh.

yea pocket you are wrong here. I was at the game and we could have put more points on the board w/ our 3rd string qb.

I agree that I wish the 1st string was sharper but once you get up big you call off the horses.

Chan did learn something in the NFL, your only one play away from playing your number two QB.......I was glad to see Taylor get some PT. I would have loved to have seen him with our first unit, but it is not worth the risk. It looks like we will have to bring our A game against Troy, and then have a short week to get ready for UVA. We did what we were suppose to do today. I was happy to see the young guys get some PT. Now all concentration is on Troy.

We need to know how to score points offensively, and that did not happen today, considering the opponent.
I am happy that the second team OL got to play, but wanted to see them in more than mop up duty.

I am happy with the win, but had hoped that we would attack our scoring issue fo 60 minutes.
Samford scheduled us to get a check, and they got it. We needed more out of today's game offensively.

FWIW, our D continues to be magnificent.

Funny, I said at halftime that if our 2nd teamers and 3rd string don't get some quality minutes then I would be pissed. You get better by building depth, not scoring ponts on a useless team.

It appears then that we just disagree.
Building depth is not just about getting minutes.

I see whatcha'r sayin', but I gotta question how much it would have been possible for the first string to learn against this team. When you factor in the potential for injury, I think the coaches were right in letting everyone play.

It's a great camaraderie and morale builder. Real game experience can really have a big benefit for those that have little or no game minutes.

The backups didn't hold off from scoring more than 3 points because Gailey was actively trying not to run up the score. They didn't score more than 3 points because they COULD NOT SCORE.

You are an idiot if you honestly believe that. During the 1st half we threw about 75% of the time and during the 4th quarter we threw about 5% of the time.

Like it or not, Chan has shown since he has been with us he will absolutely not run up a score. He could have padded some offensive and scoring stats today but chose to rest starters and play everybody.

Bennett actually looked sharp and likely would have had a TD if he had thrown the fade to Calvin instead of X. I like X, but he just missed the pass. Had one more dropped, I believe by Cooper - which may have been our first pass to a TE this year.

Kick coverage was horrible enough that I think we kicked the kickoff out of bounds on purpose once.

I saw some players in there that I had no idea who they really were. Good to get them some PT. Braman almost had a pick.

You've got that right, the play was right in front of me - Taylor had great touch on the pass but X just mistimed his jumped. Not that he had to jump at all. If he just runs out his route, then Taylor hits him in the hands.

I don't agree with keeping the first string in but i wished we had tried to do more when Bennet was in there, and left him in longer.

Bennett had a nice throw to the right flat where he actually checked through receivers before dumping it off. He seemed to check through nicely. Of course, this was against a worn out Samford squad, but he still looked like a prototypical drop back passer while he was in.

so you want us to add to our playbook for Samford???...so that Troy and UVA can study better.

come on pocket...relax....its Samford.

our 1st team gains little from playing them. heck, lets hope Djay Jones is not out for Troy.

I know I'm not a coach and Charlie is, but playing Quinn at that point is just asinine. Personally, I was delighted when I no longer saw a #21 in our receiving corps. It takes one blink of an eye for you to lose your star player and completely turn your season around.

Honestly, I just don't get this urge to win by 52 instead of 32, at least not if we have to risk our 1st teamers. Unlike Troy-FSU, it's not like people will look at 38-6 and think Samford somehow hung in there with us.

And btw, interceptions for touchdowns are part of a lot of blowouts like this. We had one against Syracuse in 2004 and LSU had one against Arizona today. Points are points, and when we have enough points to be secure, we should take the 1st teamers out.

Maybe I have made the point I have been trying to, but no one else feels the same.

That is, that this team needs to know what it feels like to put up a half dollar on somebody, anybody.
I didn't expect that we would find ourselves ranked by burning out the scoreboard against Samford.

I am not sure this team is mentally prepared to score in bunches, and that mindset will be important very soon.
Charlie Weiss may have thought the same thing about his club against PSU.

I agree with you more often than not, PW, but not this time. ND is highly ranked, and the way to get the attention of the pollsters and the BCS is to score lots of points while beating a ranked opponent. That did not apply to us yesterday. If we had beaten Samford by 100 points, it probably would not have made a difference in the polls, and even if it had helped us to crack into the rankings, we still aren't playing for a national championship like ND is. I am not a huge Chan supporter, but in this case I think he did the right thing. The second and third teamers needed game experience, and he gave it to them. Good for him.
