3 simple questions on coaching turnout this year and how its effect on our situation

I have not posted for a while but reading about the possible coaching candidates I have not found anything that mentions the number of coaching openings that will potentially happen this year and how that might affect our own search. So here are three questions to consider.

1) How many coaching changes at BCS conference schools will happen this year?

Some suggestions HC on openings:

Nebraska
Texas A & M
Arkansas
UCLA
Notre Dame
Clemson
Michigan
Ole Miss
Minnesota
Washington

2) Once you have chosen your HC openings, will there be enough qualified candidates to fill those positions? Also think of the chain reaction a hire can cause (example Les Miles to Michigan leaves LSU, another high profile job open out there).

3) How attractive is the Tech HC position when compared to some of these openings? Can we really find a suitable candidate given the competition of at least 4 (I count A&M, Nebraska, Arkansas and UCLA) more attractive job openings?

Thoughts?

I would say that on list #1, the GT job may be better than only Ole Miss and Minnesota (perhaps Ark.) I think Weiss would get at least another year at ND.

There will be plenty of qualified coaches. On a purely mathematical basis, not all of them will succeed.Chan Gaily is qualified given his background and experience. So was the coach who replaced Bobby Ross at Tech.

Bill Curry.

Uhh a lot of those schools are NOT going to fire their coach.

Not sure if I remember correctly but didn't ND extend the contract for Weise another bunch of years? If they did that would be a big buy out.

all of those arent going to come open, also when the shuffle begins others become open. we can attract a good HC , i think WF has.

Notre Dame could buyout Donald Trump

I'm pretty certain that A&M, Nebraska, Arkansas and UCLA will fire theirs. Probably Ole Miss too and if Loyd Carr makes it 1-6 agains the Buckeyes Michigan will be sending their jet to Baton Rouge. But even if only Nebraska, A & M and UCLA become open that will be enough to attract the top three candidates out there. California and Texas recruits alone are enough to make any coach salivate.

Nebraska - I think they will be pulling off a different list than us

Texas A & M - They are looking to pay $3-4M for a big name. Most NFL HC's don't make that kind of money. They can go after anyone.

Arkansas - Pretty comparable job from a prestige standpoint, but totally different

UCLA - With the exception of Chow, probably not direct competition due to geography

Notre Dame - Weiss isn't going anywhere

Clemson - Bowden is the master at finishing strong after early disppointments

Michigan - Still in it to win the Big 10 unless Carr implodes I think he stays if he wants to

Ole Miss - No way we lose out on someone for this one

Minnesota - I know they suck this year, but isn't this their new HC's first year? I lived in Minneapolis. Not nearly as good a job. Good luck recruiting there. Come to Siberia for 4-5 years. We have homecoming on a Thursday.

Washington - Good job, but just like UCLA I don't know if there will be much overlap in the candidate pool

Syracuse - I believe that Chow went to Syracuse (?). I can't believe they didn't hire him last time.

I would think that Jim Leavitt would be on a lot of people's short lists. For $3-4M, Schiano might be swayed. I am sure Rich Rodriguez will be mentioned for both Texas A&M and Nebraska, but he's probably not going anywhere. You would think Gary Patterson at TCU would get a look for A & M, Nebraska, and Arkansas. Someone is bound to throw some money at Chris Peterson at Boise State. If Arkansas let's Nutt go, I am pretty sure someone will pick him up. Rich Brooks name will probably come up for some of the openings. Will Jim Mora Jr. get his dream job in Washington? Brian Kelly at Cincinatti will get mentioned for a number of these jobs. What about Bronco Mendenhall (what a football name) at BYU? Mike Leach at Texas Tech? Ferentz at Iowa might get mentioned for some of the high priced gigs.

I could see maybe half of the firing their coach though.

It's a valid question. The other thing to think of, is whether we'd want any of the people who got fired, either as a HC or an OC or other position under the new HC.

I agree with JTS's analysis of the list.

This is a tad off-topic, but I've been wondering about it lately.

When we talk about the list of candidates, why does no one mention Dennis Ericson? The guy has done amazing things with ASU, and he was the man at Miami.

I'm sure there's some reason I just don't know about. Is he getting paid a lot of money by ASU? Is his contract such that he can't leave? It just seems that if he was available, he'd be an excellent candidate for the Tech job.

I will admit that Erickson is probably a good coach, but this is probably the reason that a lot of folks don't mention him as a candidate:

Miami Football Controversies and Scandals, 1989-1995

Coincidentally, DE was the coach of UM from 1989-1994. Maybe it doesn't matter, but I tend to think that it does.

Beyond that, I can't speak to his current contract.

Erickson wins by bringing in a bunch of thugs from JUCO that even the SEC schools can't take. He couldn't bring his style to GT.

Re: 3 simple questions on coaching turnout this year and how its effect on our situat

Here is a name that I have not heard:

Josh McDaniels - OC for Patriots

He was a GA under Saban and Patriots seem to score lots of points. The guy must be a pretty good coach to advance as quickly as he has.

Re: 3 simple questions on coaching turnout this year and how its effect on our situat

I think it would be a hard sell to the Tech community because he is in the NFL, i.e. Gailey, Weiss,Wannstadt

OC for Patriots

Ruh row shaggy. Didn't the Pats already send one offensive guru down to the college game?

Yeah, but McDaniels must be like 32. He is already an NFL OC for the best HC in the league and was GA under one of the college HC's. In order to get where he is so quickly under the quality HC's he has worked for, he must be a really good coach.

Re: 3 simple questions on coaching turnout this year and how its effect on our situat

Wow Rodriquez is a perfect fit for Nebraska. I don't see him leaving WVU but he'd be the right guy I'd think.

By the way, I think the Tech job is a whole lot better job than Arkansas.

Re: 3 simple questions on coaching turnout this year and how its effect on our situat

If Rodriguez didn't leave for Bama, with the kind of money they were throwing at him, he's not leaving for Nebraska. Paul Johnson might bring the option back to Nebraska, though, which might work for them.

The Tech job is about on par with the job at Arkansas, which is about on par with the job at Texas A&M.

Re: 3 simple questions on coaching turnout this year and how its effect on our situat

Texas A & M is pretty darn good job. It's a good recruiting state, they have tons of money, and a huge fan base. Add good coaching and the sky is the limit.
