33J,

In the days when the rumors were flying thick, fast and hot about PJ becoming GT's coach you expressed concerns about PJ being able to recruit top talent with his offense....

In view of how recruiting is going to date, do you think your concerns were overblown, or on the mark? Is PJ doing better or worse than what you expected at this point?

And I'll prolly ax this question of you again after signing day!

I'm particularly interested in 33's opinion, but I'd also like to solicit other font's opinions as well.

I don't follow recruiting closely, so I don't really know what to think.

I would think that question would be for PJ. He seems to know who he is after. Scouting reports won't help an assesment of the job done, and I think PJ would agree. He obviously wants speed and is getting it. What influence is Wommack having on the recruiting process? Is he involved recruiting players yet, and does he get credit for any on the defensive side of the spectrum?

On a side note, I think that if this question was directed at PJ, he seems to have the jewels to admit if his expectations are being met w/ regards to recruiting efforts.

I am not 33 but IMO we won't know this until at least next year. He has taken some sleepers with the new recruits but transition year recruiting doesn't reflect long term recruiting. Look at CMR's transition year versus every other year he has been there - (unfortunately) night and day.

He does get credit in my book for holding this class together and turning in a respectable transition recruiting year. Sometimes they are complete disasters, look at Gailey's transition year.

I will say that I questioned his ability to land the high school stars also. I think next years class will paint a better picture. None of us or the high schoolers really knows what his offense will look like at GT.

There is no doubt that we will not sign any "NFL style" quarterbacks or receivers. There are too many other "options" for them (pardon the pun).

That doesn't mean that he can't win in college with those that he recruits.

I unnerstan' that it's way to early to really pass judgement on this recuiting class, but I was askin' Mr 33 if so far does it seem to be exceeding expectations?

It's exceeding mine. I think our offensive recruits have actually gotten better, especially for what PJ does.

CPJ's first recruit is an Parade All-American running back ! Pretty good indicator huh?

Hey thanks for the message. I am in the airport on my BB right now.

My quick thoughts are this.

1 - I think we land a bunch of good tweeners in a normal offense that fit the 3 O. Also land athletic under the radar qbs that fit and will play well.

2 - my concern is long term. Once everyone sees this team for 3 years what will there impression be? How will they interpret this into how it can help to the next level? Will we still be landing top athletes like now?

3 - my other concern is a d that practices day in day out against a heavy 3-O team and doesn't work against the pass much. What behavior will they inherit...will kids still want to come here?

Point is, its early. I like the early prospects though and if we continue to do this we will win the acc.

Edited to say. Considering all...he is meeting my expectations.

However, I feel validated at the same time as well with decommits and transfers. Time will tell on this one

bj, it was HIS first. Other 2 already being courted by previous staff. CPJ had to resell em though.

That really shouldn't be a problem, because the defense practices against scout team offenses during fall practices.

And we know our scout team has the same abilities as our opponents 1st string ofenses! :laugher::laugher::laugher:

Don't know what you're laughing at; every team in the country practices like that

what I am laughing at is this. In a normal practise, we will be running the spread option offennse against our #1 and #2 defenses, to practise our TO spread offense. When we game prep, we will run our defenses against a scout offense that has been recruited for the TO spread to run the conventional college offense. To say that our scout team offense with inexperienced players will be talented enough to challenge our defenses with a conventional offense is crazy to me. That's all I am saying. It ain't that simple, but I think PJ will have an answer.

Almost all teams' scout offenses are filled with inexperienced players not talented enough to challenge the starting defense

33 has a point, During the season, the 1st team D fine tune their skills against the 3rd/4th (Scout Team) The point about how skilled the scout team is at running the Pro style O is not a big concern during the season as the players are not practicing at full spead as to avoid critical untimely injuries, but during the Spring & Preseason it is 1st/2nd being tested against the 1st/2nd. The D' will not be developing the skills or reads needed to defend the conventional power dives, counter, down blocking, pocket passing, screens. With that being said I believe the advantages to the Offense out weight the disadvantages to the Defense.
